Everything Announced In The January 2024 PlayStation State of Play

Death Stranding 2 Sam State of Play

PlayStation just held its first State of Play presentation of the year, with over a dozen games featured — including some pretty big ones like Death Stranding 2 and Silent Hill. It wasn’t the most exciting presentation overall, with lots of stuff that, while interesting, isn’t particularly engaging in a Direct-style showcase, but nonetheless there’s a lot to talk about.

We’ve watched the entire presentation and separated out the big stories from the smaller ones, and come up with this list of every announcement in the January 2024 PlayStation State of Play.

Stellar Blade Release Date

The first announcement of the show was the release date for Stellar Blade, the upcoming action RPG that, let’s face it, very much feels like it was inspired by Nier: Automata. We saw a good chunk of gameplay in the presentation, along with some voice acting that was… fine. It looks quite fun, but I can’t see much in the way of innovation on this one just yet. Maybe the full game will have a lot more than was shown off here.

Stellar Blade is set to be released on PS5 on April 26, 2024.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Surprise! Sonic Generations is back, and the blue blur has brought a friend with him. Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remaster of the quite good Sonic Generations, which Sega says has been “modernized” for current-gen consoles — though there aren’t any details whatsoever about what that means. It also has a new standalone campaign for Shadow the Hedgehog, the one with guns, that apparently explores his backstory.

No firm release date has been set for Sonic X Shadow Generations, but it’s set to be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store in Autumn 2024.

Silent Hill: The Short Message

Everyone loved PT, right? Konami certainly knows that, and while the game it was advertising never came to be, the strategy is very much alive and well. Konami both announced and released a free, new Silent Hill game called SIlent Hill: The Short Message, and the trailer for it is quite spooky. We’ll be digging into this one shortly, but it’s pretty exciting to be playing a new Silent Hill game after all this time. We also got another glimpse at Silent Hill 2’s remake, but there’s still no release date.

Silent Hill: The Short Message is available to download now on the PlayStation Store.

Death Stranding 2 Reveal Trailer

Hideo Kojima 2 was very much present during the State of Play, with a brand-new trailer for Death Stranding 2, now subtitled “On The Beach.” We’d seen this game teased previously, but this was a full-fat trailer with plenty of heavy exposition, a talking puppet, a resurrected Higgs, and a setting that’s apparently outside of America. It’s hard to overstate just how bonkers this trailer is, so you really need to watch it for yourself. Hideo Kojima also announced he was working on an “action espionage” title called Physint after DS2, so that should be fun.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach will be released on PS5 in 2025.

Everything Announced In The State of Play

Apart from the above, there were plenty of other things announced in the State of Play that while great, perhaps don’t necessarily need singling out. Among the highlights here are an Until Dawn remaster which Sony says was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, a gameplay preview for Rise of the Ronin, a couple of PSVR2 games that nobody will play, and Godzilla DLC for Dave the Diver.
