The New England Patriots surprised a lot of fans with their first-round pick on Thursday night, selecting University of Tennessee-Chattanooga offensive lineman Cole Strange.

Strange wasn’t considered a first-round prospect, but Patriots head coach Bill Belichick clearly thought otherwise.

“Yeah. I mean, we felt like that was a good — a guy that fits well — Cole fits well into our team and our system,” Belichick said of Strange, via NFL.com. “Obviously think he’s a good player.”

When the pick was officially announced, several NFL analysts called it a “reach” for the Patriots. Some, however, are hesitant to doubt Belichick.

“This is really, really early for Cole Strange but I have a rule to never question Belichick,” ESPN’s Matt Miller said.

Former NFL executive Andrew Brandt, meanwhile, had a great reaction to the Patriots’ first-round selection.

For reference, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah had Strange ranked as the 74th prospect in this year’s draft.

Strange should be just fine though as long as he has the right supporting staff, and obviously, he has a great coach by his side in Belichick.

The Patriots have plenty of draft picks at their disposal to fill out other holes on their roster this weekend.
