The United States women’s soccer team punched their ticket to the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, defeating Netherlands in a penalty shootout on Friday.

After giving up an early goal to Vivianne Miedema, the U.S. responded with quick goals from Samantha Mewis and Lynn Williams. However, this match ended up going into extra time because Miedema evened up the score in the 54th minute with her second goal of the night.

In extra time, the U.S. had plenty of chances to put away Netherlands. Christen Press had a great opportunity to put the USWNT ahead of Netherlands, but unfortunately she was offside.

A few minutes later, Alex Morgan scored what could’ve been the game-winning goal. Similar to Press, she was offside and had her goal waved off by the officiating crew.

As you’d expect, U.S. fans were pretty frustrated with both calls. This led to fans tweeting “can you be offside in a penalty shootout?”

Fortunately for the USWNT, you can’t be offside during a penalty shootout. And as a result, the USWNT managed to take care of business against Netherlands.

U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was exceptional when it mattered most, as she came up with two clutch saves during the shootout.

Next up for the USWNT is a date with Canada in the semifinals.
