Every Upcoming DCU Movie and TV Show in The New DC Universe

The DCEU is dead, long live the DCU. James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, are rebooting the DC universe for the big and small screens. Gunn took to social media to share the studio’s upcoming slate of projects, all of which will connect to form a new DC Universe.

What separates DCU from the old DCEU is that it incorporates all forms of media - live-action films, television, animated projects, tie-in comic books, and video games. Similar to the MCU’s phases, the DCU will have projects divided into chapters, with the first chapter called “Gods and Monsters”. Gunn has revealed the first slate of projects in development for the DCU’s first chapter, with more projects being added following the initial announcement. Projects that take place outside of the DCU continuity, like The Batman and Joker, will be labeled as DC Elseworlds.

Superman - July 11, 2025

Formerly called Superman: Legacy, the film is being written and directed by James Gunn himself, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman. The film will kick off the DCU proper, with a powerful cast including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film will show a young Superman on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

It will also include other DC heroes, such as Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (Green Lantern), Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. Other characters appearing in the film include Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio), Perry White (Wendell Pierce), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn).

It will also include Angela Spica/The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), a noteworthy member of The Authority, another superhero group getting its own movie in the DCU. Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

The Authority

The Authority is a group of superheroes in the DC universe, based on the Wildstorm comic book imprint, who think the world is broken and must do whatever it takes to fix it. This includes “killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments” and anything else, as described by James Gunn. The Authority is a passion project for Gunn and will have a more mature tone compared to the rest of DC’s lineup. Think of it as The Boys, but in the DCU. Formed by Jenny Sparks with the remaining members of StormWatch, it includes The Engineer, Jeroen Thornedike, Apollo, Midnighter, and other heroes who have joined the team in the comics.

It is currently unknown who the team will consist of in the feature film besides The Engineer, who will debut in Superman. The Authority currently has no director or release date attached to it.

The Brave and The Bold

The Brave and The Bold will see the introduction of the DCU’s Batman along with the Bat-family. Based on Grant Morrison's run of the comics, and not the Cartoon Network series, the film will also mark the first live-action theatrical appearance of Damian Wayne, Bruce’s biological son, as Robin. The DCU’s Bat family is already formed, with a lot of history between Batman and its members.

The Brave and The Bold will be directed by Andy Muschietti, who already has experience directing multiple Batmen in 2023’s The Flash. It has no release date attached to it, although logic would dictate that it will arrive after Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 hits theaters on October 2, 2026.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s eight-issue miniseries, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow offers a different perspective on Kara Zor-El, who grew up in a chunk of Krypton in space. Supergirl will be a jaded character compared to Superman. In the comic, Supergirl travels the cosmos with Ruthye, an alien girl who is looking for justice after her father’s death.

The Girl of Steel will be played by Milly Alcock, who recently rose to fame for her performance as a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. She will debut in Superman (2025) before leading her solo film.

Craig Gillespie, director of I, Tonya and Cruella, is in talks to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with the script being written by Ana Nogueira. It is reportedly aiming to start filming in late 2024, suggesting a 2026 release at the earliest.

Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing will explore the dark origins of the creature, with a tone that is the polar opposite of Superman. The film will still connect to the rest of the DCU, but it seems like most of his adventures will remain stand-alone. The film, as per Gunn, will take inspiration from Alan Moore’s The Saga of the Swamp Thing comic run.

Swamp Thing is being written and directed by James Mangold, who has some experience with comic book movies as he helmed The Wolverine and Logan. There is no release date attached to it yet.

Teen Titans

The latest film to join the DCU slate, the Teen Titans will finally grace the big screen after many adventures in comics, animation, and TV. The film is written by Ana Nogueira, who also handles screenwriting duties on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

With the introduction of the Bat-family in The Brave and The Bold, it seems like Teen Titans will be a direct follow-up to the events of that film. It may even introduce us to the DCU’s version of The Flash and Cyborg. Following the edgy Titans show on CW, the DCU’s Teen Titans is in an interesting spot. Will be as dark as the show, or be a light-hearted affair as the animated show? Time will tell.

Teen Titans currently sits without a release date or a director attached to the project. It is also unclear whether the film will be part of the ‘Gods & Monsters’ chapter.

Every Upcoming DCU TV Show

Creature Commandos (Animated, 2024)

Technically the first DCU project, Creature Commandos will give us our first look at the newly formed universe, but in animation. The show follows a group of monsters led by Rick Flag Sr (Frank Grillo), including Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), the Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), G.I Robot, Weasel (both played by Sean Gunn). Additionally, Anya Chalotra (Yennefer in The Witcher) will play Circe.

The cast includes actors reprising their roles from live-action projects, including Viola Davis and Steve Agee as Waller and Economos (from Peacemaker). Like the Suicide Squad, the Creature Commandos are assembled by Waller. The DCU will feature crossovers between the animated and live-action mediums, with characters being played by the same actor across both.

Creature Commandos will release later in 2024, with all seven episodes written by James Gunn.

Peacemaker (Season 2)

John Cena is coming back as Peacemaker. The second season of HBO Max’s hit series will be set in the DCU continuity, with most members of the cast expected to reprise their roles. All eight episodes have been written by James Gunn.

If you watched Peacemaker season one, you’ll remember that the DCEU’s Justice League made a cameo appearance in its final episode. With season two set in the DCU, it looks like certain events like that will be retconned. That shouldn’t be hard, considering most of Peacemaker (and 2021’s The Suicide Squad) stand apart from DC’s messy continuity. We’ll just have to pretend that Christopher Smith never met Jason Momoa’s Aquaman or Ezra Miller’s Flash. Gunn has confirmed that the events of Superman will have an impact on Peacemaker, with the show explaining the change in continuity.

Waller

A continuation of Peacemaker, Waller will see Viola Davis lead the show with members of Team Peacemaker reprising their roles. Details are scarce, although we know that the show will arrive following the second season of Peacemaker.

Waller is being written by Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver, with no directors announced for it yet.

Lanterns

After over a decade of absence in mainstream live-action media, the Green Lanterns are making a comeback. Following Guy Gardner’s debut in Superman, Hal Jordan and John Stewart will lead the show. The duo will investigate a mystery on Earth which will tie into the larger story of the DCU.

Gunn has described it as “like True Detective with a couple of Lanterns who are space cops”, and that’s a collection of words that has us very excited. The show currently has no directors or release date attached to it.

Paradise Lost

We don’t know when Wonder Woman will make her debut in the DCU, but Paradise Lost may be the perfect place for it. The show will delve into the politics and power struggle on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Princess Diana. The show has been compared to Game of Thrones in tone, so expect lots of political (and literal) backstabbing.

The show may be inspired by Paradise Island Lost, a comic book series from Phil Jimenez and George Pérez, which explored a civil war between the Themysciran Amazons and Bana-Mighdall Amazons. The key difference is that the comic book also included Diana in a key role, unlike the show.

Paradise Lost currently has no directors or release date attached to it.

Booster Gold

At long last, Booster Gold will be making a big splash in the DC universe soon. The show will follow the adventures of Mike Carter, a “loser from the future” who travels to the present day to become a superhero. Carter uses technology from his timeline to aid in his quest.

The show has been described as “the superhero story of imposter syndrome”. Booster Gold currently has no showrunner or release date attached to it. Considering the fact that the DCEU’s Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) will transition over to the DCU, and the character’s history with Booster Gold, a cameo from the former would be fair to expect in the show.

Untitled Arkham Asylum Series

Matt Reeves, who directed DC Elseworlds movie The Batman and its spinoff The Penguin, is creating a new series set in the DCU. The show will explore Gotham’s Arkham Asylum and its inmates. The project started development as a show based on the Gotham City Police Department before developing into its current form.

The series is written by Reeves with Antonio Campos (The Staircase) acting as showrunner, with the latter also expected to direct the series. It is unknown when the show will be released.

The DCU will also include video games, but no projects have been announce in that realm yet.
