Every Car and Driver Magazine Cover in 2023Car and Driver

There's something beautiful about the printed word. Maybe it's the scent of ink or the paper on which it bleeds. Maybe it's the luxury of viewing stories on something larger than a phone screen or it's the break from staring at one completely. Ultimately, it doesn't matter why you like it. Because we're going to keep doing it.

This year our magazine covers harbored no slow cars. We featured the quickest Corvette ever one month and one we predict to be the largest ever. A 300-hp Corolla made the cover and we made our EV of the Year look like it was zapped by a Tesla Coil. Here are the covers from this year's 10 issues of Car and Driver as well as the additional Buyer's Guide shopping tool that told this year in cars the way it's been told since 1955: using ink and paper.

Last year's 10Best Cars was the 40th anniversary of our coveted award. To keep up with modern pricing, we raised the cap for our 2023 10Best Cars threshold to $110,000. Newcomers to the 10Best Cars stage include the all-electric BMW i4 and 300-hp Toyota GR Corolla.

In other anniversaries, our 16th annual visit to Virginia International Raceway for Lightning Lap wrought big results. The new Honda Civic Type R obliterated its previous time and the 670-hp Chevrolet Corvette Z06's laptime made it the quickest car with a naturally aspirated engine we've tested there.

Quick hatchbacks with a manual transmission and starting prices under the new-car average are our jam. During our hot-hatch comparison test, we pit the the Honda Civic Type R against the Toyota GR Corolla and the Volkswagen Golf R. Each participant partied hard. While there's only room for one car in first place, there isn't a loser in the bunch.

Our best guess at what the 1000-hp 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Zora will look like looks a lot like a GT3 race car. Other vehicles we speculate will become a reality in the next few years are the twin-turbo Corvette ZR-1, a Corvette SUV, and an off-road Ford Mustang Raptor.

If gas-powered cars aren't heading into the sunset, they sure as hell are partying like it's the last hurrah. The 453-hp BMW M2 isn't being supplanted by battery power quietly. Also in this issue, the most affordable EV, a Chevy Bolt, goes head to head with a similarly priced Volkswagen Jetta Sport.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 won our EV of the Year award in 2023, beating 13 all-electric competitors to the punch. We sampled everything with meaningful updates or all-new models entirely back to back on the same stretch of road. When it comes to EVs, Hyundai and Kia are leagues ahead.

They warn you to never meet your childhood heroes, out of fear of disappointment, but driving the Acura Integra Type S brings no such sadness. It's aggressively fun and takes some of the edge off the hardcore characteristics of the Civic Type R.

Look, if you can't tell by the cover of our magazine, it's been a big year for the Corvette. Here's the quickest one we've ever tested, the hybrid 655-hp Corvette E-Ray. It cracked off to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds during our test, and it's the first time Chevy has sold this American sweetheart with all-wheel drive.

The humble northern Michigan town of Oscoda might only have two traffic lights, but it also has a 2.2-mile taxiway primed for fast cars. We used the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base to resurrect a test from long ago that measured how quickly cars could accelerate to 150 mph and then back to a stop. We threw 10 cars and two SUVs at the 0-to-150-0 speed test.
