Islanders are coming together to celebrate Liberation Day 2024, with a host of festivities planned throughout the day.

The day marks 79 years since Guernsey was liberated from Nazi occupation and the end of World War Two.

Events are set to take place from dawn to dusk, starting with the sounding of the siren from Victoria Tower and culminating in a fireworks display at La Vallette.

The celebrations are traditionally centred in St Peter Port, but in recent years more events have been held around the island.

Highlights including the school relay race, military parade and an evening concert of 1940s music will take place in the town.

The annual vintage vehicle Calvacade will start from the Imperial Hotel and travel around the coast to St Peter Port.

Elsewhere, St Pierre du Bois will host an all-day celebration from 11:00 BST on L’Eree Common and the Vale is hosting a tea party.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, member of the Committee for Education, Sport, and Culture, said: "We are very much seeking to use this year as an opportunity to build momentum towards next year, which will be a huge event, like in previous years, as the island celebrates 80 years since our liberation."
