The first reviews are in for Sofia Coppola's new movie Priscilla, and its good news for the biopic.

Starring Euphoria's Jacob Elordi and Mare of Easttown's Cailee Spaeny, Priscilla is based on Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, which gives her perspective on her troubled relationship with the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

Following the film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the first reviews have landed on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with Priscilla currently sitting on 91% from 88 reviews at the time of writing.

Critics have praised Coppola's decision to make Priscilla the centre of her own story and not avoiding the more controversial aspects of her and Elvis' relationship.

Here's what the reviews have said:

BBC

"Instead of turning Priscilla's life story into an excessive cautionary tale or an empowering feminist fable, she has sketched a cool, non-judgemental portrait of someone who is a passive observer of her own existence. It's still a quietly affecting, sympathetic tribute to the kind of person who is a supporting character in most biopics."

Entertainment Weekly

"Priscilla is by no means a perfect film, but it's refreshing for its mere existence. In last year's Elvis, the character of Priscilla was reduced to a simpering bouffant, and here, she is a fully realized human being."

The Independent

"In her own coolly analytical way, Coppola makes some trenchant points about the way Priscilla is controlled by the men in her life. She is living in a gilded cage. The wealth and luxury she experiences don't compensate for her complete loss of freedom."

The Hollywood Reporter

"An impeccable union of director and subject... Coppola flips the balance here to an extent that risks rubbing hardcore Elvis fans the wrong way, putting the performer in a less-than-flattering though never unfair light. But it elegantly upgrades a key player in the Elvis legend from the sidelines, and anyone attuned to Coppola's distinctive wavelengths will find it a pleasurably emotional experience."

Time Out

"With so many biopics depicting the 'woman behind the man' as a victim, it's great to see one that seizes back control of the narrative. Empathetic rather than judgy, Coppola's relationship drama hands agency back to its young heroine."

Priscilla is set to be released on November 3 in the US and opens with preview screenings from December 26 in the UK, ahead of a wider release on January 1, 2024.
