Eugene-area top performers: Junction City softball, Sheldon girls golf, Marist boys tennis

The spring high school sports season is getting closer to the postseason and Eugene-area athletes are continuing to shine.

Here are the top local performers for softball, girls golf, baseball, tennis and more.

Softball

Junction City and Marist split a doubleheader on Friday. The Tigers won 11-10 in Game 1.

The bigger story was Lily Buendia's attempt at breaking the state record for runs batted in a season for the Tigers.

Buendia had a chance of breaking the record (74) set by Marist's Abby Doerr in 2019. Instead, the Spartans chose to walk her a combined five times during the doubleheader.

"I've never seen anything like it," Junction City head coach Mike Campbell said. "She's worked so hard and for them to do that was disrespectful."

The junior still managed a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored, putting her 11 away from the goal.
