ESPN’s Jay Williams Called Out For Embarrassing Mistake

The Boston Celtics filled their coaching vacancy this Wednesday, hiring Brooklyn Nets assistant and former NBA forward Ime Udoka. Right after ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news, Jay Williams shared his thoughts on the hire.

“The first head coach of color for the Celtics… & even more importantly… he is one talented individual who has paid his dues,” Williams tweeted.

Williams quickly deleted that tweet after several people pointed out that he’s wrong about the Celtics’ history. Udoka is not even the second or third head coach of color to join the franchise.

Bill Russell, Tom Sanders, K.C. Jones, M.L. Carr and Doc Rivers all came before Udoka. As you’d expect, Williams received a lot of criticism on Twitter because of this mistake.

“WOW Jay Williams. FIRST??? Did you forget about the 5 NBA championship teams coached by Bill Russell, KC Jones, & Doc Rivers? Tom “Satch” Sanders has also coached the C’s & ML Carr was both a coach & GM. No wonder why non-C’s fans are so clueless about Boston’s history,” CelticsLife.com wrote on Twitter.

One fan tweeted “Jay Williams’ tweet can’t be real.”

Williams has not yet commented on this error. He did, however, tweet about Chris Paul’s return to the Phoenix Suns within the last hour.

It’s highly unlikely that Williams meant to snub all the head coaches who came before Udoka, but the reality is he made an inexcusable mistake for a veteran NBA analyst.
