ESPN Analyst Says Another College Football Power Should Join SEC

This year’s college football offseason has been dominated by talks of conference realignment. And with Oklahoma and Texas set to be welcomed into the SEC, why not throw some other big-time names into the mix?

ESPN college football analyst David Pollack believes the Clemson Tigers should be the next team to make their move to the SEC.

“ACC, what do you do? Again, you’re not in a position of power. You don’t have a huge league that everybody’s looking to get a bunch of members of,” Pollack said on a recent appearance with College Football Live. “So, I think that, again, Clemson — just like the Big 12. It was very much focused on what OU and Texas wanted. ACC, it’s like, ‘Clemson, please don’t leave me, bro. Like, stay as long as you can and then, maybe bring a spot for me if I need to.’

“But I don’t see how it doesn’t make the most sense for them to plug into the SEC… They’re right there in the south, they’re right there in the powerhouse, they’re recruiting just fine against everybody else. My God, it seems to make a lot of sense that the ACC or Clemson will join the SEC.”

While there are plenty of reasons why Clemson would be a good fit for the SEC (money, location, pedigree), there are also some fair reasons why they wouldn’t want to leave the ACC.

The Tigers have now waltzed their way to six straight College Football Playoff appearances, dominating their regular-season conference competition along the way. If they were to join the SEC, that path the the CFP would immediately become much more difficult.

As it stands now, Clemson seems to be right in the strength-of-schedule sweet spot.

Another issue would be the massive size of the already growing SEC. If the conference elects to vote in Oklahoma and Texas, the team count would balloon to 16. The addition of any more teams after that would likely bring up some significant scheduling issues.

The ACC powerhouse seems to be content with its position right now, but you never know what could happen in today’s ever-shifting college football landscape.
