Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Erik Swanson, a Terrace Park native and former Mariemont High School standout, left spring training after his 4-year-old son, Toby, was hit by a car and airlifted to a hospital Sunday in Clearwater, Florida.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Tuesday that Swanson will be away from the team for a while. Schneider added that Toby is "on the road to recovery and surrounded by family."

"Family comes first," Schneider added. "Our love, support and prayers are with Erik, Madison, Toby and the entire Swanson family."

In 2019, Swanson was with the Seattle Mariners when he became the first former Mariemont standout to make his Major League Baseball debut. He got to face his hometown Cincinnati Reds later in the same season.

Swanson, 30, grew up as a neighbor of former Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman.

Toronto acquired Swanson in a trade with Seattle in November 2022. In his first season with the Blue Jays, Swanson posted a 2.97 ERA in 69 appearances, all in relief.
