Erie County's under a winter storm warning. Here's how much snow to expect through Sunday.

The less-than-snowy start to the season in Erie County in late December and the first half of January could be a memory by Sunday if the forecast holds.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a winter storm warning for Erie County from Friday at 1 a.m. through Sunday at 4 a.m. A warning also has been issued in Ashtabula County, Ohio, and advisories put in place in Crawford, Warren, Venango, Mercer and Forest counties, but Erie County is where the greatest snowfall total is forecast.

How much snow will Erie County get?

The weather service warning calls for widespread snow late Thursday and Friday morning, transitioning to lake-effect snow Friday afternoon through Saturday night. Total accumulations of 8 inches to 13 inches are possible, and winds will gust as high a 30 mph. Travel could be difficult.

The Erie County forecast calls for an inch or 2 inches of new snow Thursday, mainly before 3 p.m., and an additional inch or 2 inches Thursday night, mainly after 11 p.m.

Things could pick up Friday. The forecast is for snow before noon followed by snow showers and increasing winds from the north. New snow accumulation of 3 inches to 5 inches is possible.

An additional inch to 2 inches is possible Friday night.

There is an 80% chance of snow showers Saturday, when an inch to 3 inches of snow is the forecast. Snow showers are likely Saturday night as well, mainly before 1 a.m.

Erie County could more than double its snowfall total since Dec. 1 by Sunday morning. Just 7.6 inches has fallen since Jan. 1, or 10.8 inches off the average through Jan. 16, according to weather service data. Just 9 inches has fallen since Dec. 1, or 35.7 inches below average.

How much snow will Crawford County get?

Crawford County is under a winter weather advisory from Friday at 1 a.m. until Sunday at 4 a.m.

The weather service calls for 4 inches to 8 inches of snow through Friday night with additional lake-effect snow Saturday. The greatest accumulation should be Friday, with 2 inches to 4 inches in the forecast. An additional inch to 3 inches is possible Saturday.

What's the snow forecast for the rest of northwestern Pa.?

Winter weather advisories are in place across northwestern Pennsylania.

In Warren County, an advisory runs from Friday at 1 a.m. through Saturday at 1 a.m. Total snow accumulations of 2 inches to 4 inches are in the forecast.

An advisory is in place from Friday at 1 a.m. through Saturday at 10 a.m. for Venango, Mercer and Forest counties. The weather service in Pittsburgh calls for 3 inches to 5 inches across the area.

The weather service in Cleveland has a winter storm warning in place for Ashtabula County, Ohio, from Friday at 1 a.m. until Saturday at 10 p.m. Total snow accumulations of 7 inches to 11 inches and wind gusts to 30 mph are possible.
