‘ER’ Cast Transformations: See the Stars, Then & Now

‘ER’ was a hit medical drama series that aired from 1994 to 2009, with 331 episodes and 15 seasons under its belt. The show followed the lives of doctors and nurses working in the emergency room at County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. ‘ER’ was the longest-running medical drama in history until ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ surpassed it in season 16.


The show featured an incredible ensemble cast that included George Clooney, Julianna Marguiles, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle, Noah Wyle, Sherry Stringfield, Ming-Na Wen, Alex Kingston, and more. George got his start on ‘ER’ and has since become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He played Dr. Doug Ross on ‘ER’ from season 1 until season 5. He did return in the final season. Since ‘ER,’ George has won an Oscar for his role in ‘Syriana’ and for producing the film ‘Argo.’ His other notable films include ‘Up In The Air,’ the ‘Oceans’ movies, ‘The Descendants,’ and more. He is married to Amal Clooney and they have twins, Ella and Alexander.

Julianna Marguiles starred as Nurse Carol Hathaway from 1994 to 2000 and won an Emmy for her performance. She left after season 6 but returned for an episode in the final season. After ‘ER,’ Julianna notably went on to star in the CBS series ‘The Good Wife’ from 2009 to 2016. She won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for her performance as Alicia Florrick. She recently had a recurring role on ‘Billions’ and will star in the second season of ‘The Morning Show.’

Noah Wyle played John Carter on ‘ER’ for the first 11 seasons and then again in the 15th and final season. He received multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations He went on to star in ‘The Librarian’ franchise and ‘Falling Skies.’ Noah had a main role in the CBS series ‘The Red Line’ in 2019, which earned him a Critics’ Choice Award nomination. His next series is the ‘Leverage’ revival, ‘Leverage: Redemption.’

Anthony Edwards played Dr. Mark Greene in the first 8 seasons of ‘ER.’ He received a Golden Globe and 6 SAG Awards for his role. In the years since ‘ER,’ Anthony has starred in several films and appeared on TV shows like ‘Law & Order True Crime’ and ‘Designated Survivor.’

Eriq La Salle starred as Dr. Peter Benton from 1994 to 2002 and again in 2008. He received three Golden Globe and three Emmy nominations. In addition to acting, Eriq has made a name for himself behind the camera in recent years. He’s directed multiple episodes of ‘Chicago P.D.’ (and served as an executive producer), ‘Lucifer,’ ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ and more.

Laura Innes notably played Dr. Kerry Weaver from 1995 to 2007. She also came back for the final season of ‘ER.’ She went on to star in shows like ‘The Event’ and ‘Awake.’ She had major recurring roles on ‘Colony’ and ‘How to Get Away With Murder.’ She also directed episodes of ‘Sneaky Pete’ and ‘Mr. Mercedes.’

Sherry Stringfield starred as Dr. Susan Lewis on ‘ER’ for the first three seasons. She returned to the show in 2001 and left again in 2005. She appeared in the show’s series finale. Sherry has starred in several TV and feature films over the years. She’s also had recurring roles on ‘Under the Dome’ and ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.’

Alex Kingston joined the show in season four as Dr. Elizabeth Corday. Her character was written off in season 11, but she did return for the finale. Alex has since notably played River Song on ‘Doctor Who’ and Dinah Lance on ‘Arrow.’ Her most recent roles include Sarah Bishop on ‘A Discovery of Witches’ and Judith Gray on ‘The Widow.’

Ming-Na Wen starred as Dr. Deb Chen on ‘ER’ from 1995 to 2004. In the midst of ‘ER,’ Ming-Na voiced the iconic role of Mulan in the 1998 Disney movie of the same name. She has since starred as Melinda May on ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and Fennec Shand on ‘The Mandalorian.’ She will reprise the role of Fennec Shand in the upcoming Disney+ series ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ and ‘The Bad Batch.’ She notably made a cameo appearance in the 2020 live-action ‘Mulan.’

Yvette Freeman starred as nurse Haleh Adams for all 15 seasons of ‘ER.’ She was the longest-serving recurring character on the show. In recent years, Yvette’s had recurring roles on ‘Days of Our Lives,’ ‘The Bold and the Beautiful,’ and ‘Orange Is the New Black.’

Goran Visnjic starred as Dr. Luka Kovač on ‘ER’ from season six until the final season. He has since starred in films like ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘General,’ ‘Fatima,’ and more. Goran’s had main roles on shows such as ‘Extant,’ ‘Crossing Lines,’ and ‘Timeless.’ He recently appeared on ‘The Boys’ and ‘Doctor Who.’ Goran’s next role is in the upcoming series ‘The Brides.’

Gloria Reuben played Jeanie Boulet from season one until season six. She returned for an episode in season 14. Since ‘ER,’ Gloria has starred in the Academy Award-winning movie ‘Lincoln’ and had roles on ‘Cloak & Dagger,’ ‘Mr. Robot,’ and recently ‘City on a Hill.’

Maura Tierney starred as Abby Lockhart from 1999 to 2009. She went on to play Helen Solloway on the critically-acclaimed series ‘The Affair’ from 2014 to 2019. She won a Golden Globe for her performance. She recently had roles in the films ‘Beautiful Boy’ and ‘The Report,’ as well as the series ‘Your Honor.’

Laura Cerón played Nurse Chuny Marquez in all seasons of ‘ER.’ She won an ALMA Award for her role on the show. In recent years, Laura has appeared on ‘Shameless,’ ‘Station 19,’ and ‘Firefly Lane.’

Conni Marie Brazelton played Nurse Connie Oligario from 1994 to 2003. She went on to appear on ‘Private Practice,’ ‘Doubt,’ and ‘This Is Us.’

Paul McCrane played Dr. Robert Romano from season four until season 10. He guest-starred in seasons five and six of ’24’ and has had the recurring role of Judge Jonas Laski on ‘All Rise’ since 2019.

CCH Pounder played Dr. Angela Hicks from 1994 to 1997. She went on to star on ‘The Shield’ from 2002 to 2008. She has played Dr. Loretta Wade on ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ since 2014. CCH has also had recent roles in films like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.’ She will reprise the role of Mo’at in the upcoming ‘Avatar’ sequels.
