Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Interview With Nancy Pelosi Interrupted by Pro-Palestine Protesters — Watch

Pro-Palestine protesters interrupted Tuesday’s broadcast of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which is conducting a week of live shows in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention. While protesters were reportedly outside the city’s Auditorium Theater where the show is being held, a few made it inside to disrupt Colbert’s interview with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

During the interview’s first segment, a woman in the audience shouted “Free Palestine!” and questioned the United States’ support for Israel. The host acknowledged the protester and promised to bring up the subject after the break. He kept that promise, asking Pelosi her opinion on the war abroad and how the U.S. wields its power. Speaker Emerita Pelosi said she hopes cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas come to fruition.

“War has no place in a civilized society,” she said. “We have to learn more about trust and peace and learning about each other rather than to have conflict resolved by war.” (Watch video of the interview embedded above.)

Protesters continued to shout from the audience as Pelosi finished her response, to which Colbert once again acknowledged their message that the United States should not have any role in supplying Israel with arms to kill the people of Gaza. He also asked a protester in the crowd if he or she would like a response and if the crowd would be willing to listen to one.

Pelosi continued, stating that peace can only be possible if there’s a two-state solution. “Israel has a right to defend itself,” she said. “But the other part of it is that has been so major for all of us for many years is that there must be two-state solution. You cannot have peace unless you have a two-state solution. Israel, a secure Jewish democratic state in the region, and the Palestinians having their own secure country there as well. Unless you have a two-state solution, you will not have a resolution of this.”

When protesters continued to shout from the crowd, Colbert told them, “Please don’t interrupt my guests.” The segment ended shortly after.
