My Brilliant Friend: Elena Confronts Her Past (and Lila) in Final Season Trailer — Watch

Elena is returning to a nearly unrecognizable Naples in My Brilliant Friend Season 4.

HBO released a trailer for the adaptation’s fourth and final season on Thursday, and in it, a grown-up Elena (now played by Alba Rohrwacher) moves back to Naples where she finds Lila (Irene Maioria) has become the neighborhood’s biggest force. Elsewhere, Elena reveals that she’s pregnant (!) while her mother’s health declines, and she grapples with the demands of family and ambition. (Watch trailer above.)

Season 4, which debuts on Monday, Sept. 9 (9/8c), follows the fourth installment of Elena Ferrante’s Neopolitan Novels, The Story of the Lost Child, diving into the adult lives of Elena and Lila amid their complicated friendship. The pair “find themselves entangled in the turmoil of Italy in the late 1980s, nearing the end of decades of political violence and social unrest,” the official logline states. “Amid motherhood and career demands, amid betrayals, threats, disappearances, and natural disasters, Elena and Lila once again reside in the same neighborhood.”

The Season 4 cast also introduces Fabrizio Gifuni as Nino Sarratore, Stefano Dionisi as Franco Mari, Pier Giorgio Bellocchio as Pietro Airota, Lino Musella as Marcello Solara, Edoardo Pesce as Michele Solara, and Sonia Bergamasco as Maria Rosa Airota. Returning cast includes Eduardo Scarpetta as Pasquale Peluso, Anna Rita Vitolo as Immacolata Greco, Elena’s mother, and Daria Deflorian as Adele Airota, Pietro’s mother.
