Alex Trebek returns to 'Jeopardy' after completing chemo for stage 4 pancreatic cancer

79-year-old Alex Trebek is back in action on set of "Jeopardy" six months after learning he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek's return to work comes on the heels of completing several rounds of chemotherapy.

"I've gone through a lot of chemotherapy, and thankfully that is now over," he says in a behind-the-scenes video posted Thursday afternoon. "I'm on the mend, and that's all I can hope for right now."

"Let me tell you, it's going to be a good year," Trebek adds in the video clip.

Chemo has been physically and emotionally painful, he admitted earlier this year, acknowledging on "Good Morning America" that he's struggled to push through bouts of depression.

"I’ve had kidney stones, I’ve had ruptured discs, so I’m used to dealing with pain, but what I’m not used to dealing with is the surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness," he told Robin Roberts. "And it brings tears to my eyes."

In late May, nearly three months after sharing news of his diagnosis, fans were overjoyed to learn that Trebek was already "near remission": "Some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than fifty percent," he told People.

A month later, in June, Trebek received a standing ovation when he walked onstage to present at the NHL Awards.

The longtime TV personality has proven inspirational for other cancer patients across the globe who are battling diseases with low survival rates. After hearing from a fan whose mother is also battling pancreatic cancer, he sent a handwritten message in the mail: "Karen, Let’s you and I decide that we both are going to be cancer survivors. Stay positive! All the best.”
