Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 5

In a vote that ended Dec. Jan. 5, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Dec. 31.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for fall and winter winners through Dec. 15 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-February.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Goshen – Goshen is now 10-1 after going 6-0 over the final two weeks of 2023, including wins over Mount Healthy, Blanchester and West Clermont.

Ohio girls basketball team: Lakota East – Lakota East beat Oak Hills 69-21 on Dec. 20 to improve to 6-0 in GMC play to take first place in the standings.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Walton-Verona – The Bearcats are 10-4 overall after going 4-1 in the last two weeks. Walton-Verona beat Highlands and the Cincinnati Trailblazers before beating Augusta and Mason County in the Mason County Invitational.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Campbell County – Campbell County went 4-1 since Dec. 18, improving to 9-2 overall. The Camels defeated Bourbon County and Boone County before winning over Bryan Station and Madison Southern in the Giovanni’s Pizza Holiday Classic.

Boys winter team: Ryle wrestling – The Raiders won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference meet with 185 points scored.

Girls winter team: Springboro swimming – The Panthers scored 167 points and took second place at the Brave Invitational on Dec. 21.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Drew Murphy, Elder – He had 23 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in a win over McNicholas and won the player of the game award.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Cayleb Walters, Summit Country Day - He was named to the all-tournament team at a tournament in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Bella Houillion, Little Miami – She scored a team-high 16 points against Lebanon, then had 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in a win over Anderson.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Rachel Walker, Deer Park – She had a game-high 23 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals in a win over Woodward.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Garyn Jackson, Campbell County – He led the Camels with games of 19 and 18 points in two wins in the Mason County Invitational, including 18 in a win over 10th Region rival Mason County.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Nekiah Mejia, Scott – The eighth-grader posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Tates Creek on Dec. 20.

Ohio boys bowler:Peyton Frank, Reading – He shot games of 168 and 193 to lead the Blue Devils to a win over Roger Bacon on Dec. 19.

Ohio girls bowler: Ellie Miller, Taylor – She shot games of 209 and 140 to lead the Yellow Jackets to a CHL win over Indian Hill.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys bowler: Owen Hatfield, Beechwood – He shot a 220 in a loss to Holy Cross.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls bowler: Alexis Tignor, Cooper – She shot games of 227 and 178 in a win over Ryle.

Gymnast: Hayden Zimmerman, Cincinnati Country Day – Zimmerman made the host team proud at the CCDS quad. She placed second on the beam and third on the bars and in the all-around category.

Ice hockey player: Christian Rivard, Moeller – The sophomore had two goals in the Crusaders’ 7-1 over Anthony Wayne at the Hollydaze Tournament.

Ohioboys swimmer/diver: Thackston McMullan, St. Xavier – He won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle at the Jesuit Cup, beating his seed time in both events. McMullan also swam a leg of two different winning relays.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Kate Ryan, Mount Notre Dame – She won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at the Bellbrook New Year’s meet while helping two relay teams to wins.

Northern Kentucky/Indianagirls swimmer/diver: Addi Johnson, Dixie Heights – She took seventh place in the 50-yard butterfly at the Girls Night Out meet.

Boys wrestler: Brayden Blevins, Simon Kenton – Blevins won the 120-pound bracket at the Coaches Classis with two pins and a technical fall along the way.

Girls wrestler: Gabriella Ocasio, Simon Kenton – Ocasio won six matches by pinfall to finish atop the podium at 145 pounds in Marysville.
