Enjoy the ‘modern comforts’ of this UK retreat. Just ignore the coffins in the kitchen

An interesting retreat in Worcestershire, England, is turning heads all over. And no, it’s not because of its comfortable amenities and its aesthetically pleasing exterior that looks like it’s straight out of the pages of a Jane Austen novel.

Nope, what’s drawing attention is the fact that it used to be a funeral home.

You read that right.

Well, at least one of the homes on the property. The other two buildings that can also be rented is a cottage that sleeps four called Crossbrook Farm and a well house, the listing on Rural Retreats says.

If that wasn’t frightening enough, there are also coffins in the kitchen.

“When we refurbished this property, we tried to retain as many of the existing features that we could which had been hidden away under the plaster or left and not exposed,” owner Victoria Dudley said, according to the New York Post. “The family set of coffins on the wall were acquired from a funeral director up north.”

The property is referred to as “romantic and unique” and was even named one of Tripadvisor’s top 10 holiday vacation rentals in Worcestershire, Rural Retreats says.

“Exposed timbers, a feature stone fireplace, flagstone and oak floors – The Chapel has a wealth of period features and details to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time,” the listing details. “Yet the furnishings and fittings are decidedly twenty-first century, with modern comforts like a roll top bath and stylish furniture.”

Features of the Chapel rental include:

  • Primary bedroom with antique double bed

  • Wood burning stove

  • “Stone arch and mullion windows”

  • Outdoor area

  • Hair and beauty services

According to Metro.co.uk, the former funeral home cottage isn’t the only chilling building guests can stay in – the well house is haunted by the ghost of a man who drowned centuries ago.

Just in time for Halloween.

“In the Well House, the legend is a French gentleman drowned in the 18th century,” owner Stuart Dudley said, according to the Post. “There is a memorial commemorating his death on the front of the well — it’s a nice bit of history.”

Despite its chilling vibes, guests who have stayed at the property fell in love with it, according to the reviews on Rural Retreats.

“Absolutely stunning accommodation,” another read. “Every(thing) you needed at hand. Fantastic welcome hamper. All in all an amazing week!”

The Chapel cottage is available for about $639 for a “short break.”
