England have broken up their contentious playmaking axis of Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell as part of a revamped midfield selected for Sunday’s Six Nations clash with Italy.

Having started the last eight Tests together, Smith has been demoted to the bench to accommodate Owen Farrell’s selection at fly-half instead of inside centre.

Former England boss Eddie Jones hoped the creative alliance would blossom in time for the World Cup and Steve Borthwick retained the duo for his first game in charge against Scotland last Saturday, but they have fired only sporadically as a partnership.

Borthwick completed a significant overhaul of the midfield by replacing Joe Marchant with Henry Slade at outside centre while Ollie Lawrence fills the vacancy at 12.

What threats to Italy have?

“They clearly have pace. Certainly in their back three. Tomasso Allan at 10, their outside backs. And then they’ve also developed their forward pack. Their competition at the breakdown.

“The way the breakdown has been officiated, you try to get an understanding as to why decisions went a certain way. We certainly had a few late in our game last weekend which we need to understand why they went that way.”

On Henry Slade’s recall:

“I look back to some of the games over the last few years. The way Henry played in some important games, I was really impressed. Coming back I can’t tell you how impressed I’ve been with him.

“The conversations I’ve had with him. The concern he had with the red card [for Exeter] which was ultimately rescinded. How worried he was he might miss out.

“Just seeing how passionate he is to play for England. He’s a real seasoned campaigner now and he has an outstanding skillset.”

Borthwick on coaching changes:

“Richard Cockerill has been superb over the last two and a half weeks. We had discussions early on in terms of his long term plans and he’s a guy – there are very few people who care about the England team as much as he does.

“To have Aled and Richard Wigglesworth join the team at the end of the Premiership season, Aled has Prem experience, he has a gold medal from the 2019 RWC, he knows what it takes at the highest level.

“Richard has an unbelievable understanding of the game. I’m delighted they’re joining.”

On Marcus Smith and the impact he can have off the bench:

“I think you look at the talent that is on the bench, the replacements, you look at Alex Mitchell, pacy wingers, the speed of pass he has, you look at Marcus [Smith] and his ability to find space. You look at Henry Arundell. I think that’s a very exciting blend and can really impact the game. And that’s not to mention the forwards.” said Borthwick,

“As head coach I’m not going to give too much away in terms of tactics. I think having Henry Slade’s distribution skills available this week, his left foot kicking option is a great strength.

“Any team which has right and left foot kicking options, is a strength. And then I think Ollie Lawrence brings a certain skillset. We’ve all seen that in the Premiership this season.

“The way he carries the ball, and the way he defends in the physical manner he does. We want him to bring that.”

Borthwick on learning lessons from round one and what he expects from Italy:

“It’s about trying to make progress. I think we ran more than any other team in Rd 1 of the championship. So that was progress.

“The team went down on the scoreboard, and I think we saw a resilience that wasn’t there before to come back. But ultimately we didn’t finish the job. Until 74 minutes we were in a position to win the game but we didn’t. We are determined to be better than that.

“It’s a great challenge [facing Italy]. Clearly they are a very fit side. I’m sure you all watched their game against France and you see how competitive this Six Nations is.”

Borthwick reiterates that dropping Ben Youngs doesn’t mean that is the end of his England career and that he wants there to be competition for places in the squad.

“Ben’s a tremendous player with a wealth of experience and I’ve worked with him closely for the last couple of seasons.” said Borthwick,

“The way he has trained this week and handled the news around his selection is fantastic and testament to his character. I’ve got two young nines in the team this week which I think is right for this game. I’ve said this consistently.

“We want to have competition for selection. My job is to pick the right players for the game. What I look at is how they respond and I think to a man they have trained well this week.

“If we get competition for players we will have high quality players who aren’t selected.”

15:37 , Michael Jones

“My policy always has been to pick a team for the opposition. Every game matters. I’m not focusing on some game in the future.

“I feel this is a team which is right for this game. I feel blessed that we’ve got some fantastic fly halves. When you look at this team I think you see exciting young talent.

“I watched him [Arundell] as a player from afar. Seeing him first hand in training he’s an incredible talent.

“Marcus [Smith] has been brilliant. Every player has been brilliant. As a player I’ve been on the other end of that, and I remember those conversations. I have been in those situations and have empathy for the players in those situations.”

Steve Borthwick press conference

15:35 , Michael Jones

The first question asked wants Borthwick to explain the reasoning behind picking Owen Farrell over Marcus Smith at fly-half. Borthwick replied:

“I’ve decided to change that combination for this week. As ever when I pick a team I’ll pick a plan to suit the opposition. That’s the way we want to go this week.

“It’s fantastic to welcome Henry Slade back. He’s played well for his club, fantastic left foot. Ollie Lawrence has played really well all season. He’s certainly a player on form. I think we’ve got some exciting players there.”

Steve Borthwick starts his presser by welcoming back Henry Slade and Henry Arundell who return from injuries.

“I think everyone who watched round one of the Six Nations will see the strength of the Italian side and I picked an England team to face that challenge.” he said,

“I’m delighted to welcome back Henry Slade and Henry Arundell from injury. The squad have trained with tremendous dedication and application this week and we’re really looking forward to this challenge on Sunday.”

England team talking points

15:29 , Michael Jones

The big talking point is obviously Marcus Smith being dropped to the bench but there can be no issues with Owen Farrell starting at 10.

The England captain is a brilliant fly-half and this will be his first start in his favoured position for England in two years.

The bench looks strong too with the likes of Smith, Henry Arundell and Ben Earl gamechangers waiting in the wings.

Changes to the bench

Jack Walker could get the chance to make his England debut after being named as a replacement for Sunday;s game against Italy.

There are also returns for Henry Arundell, following injury, and Alex Mitchell.

Borthwick names England team vs Italy

15:11 , Michael Jones

“We welcome an exciting and in form Italy team to Twickenham on Sunday,” said Borthwick. “We recognise and respect the very real threat they pose in this Six Nations Championship and we are preparing accordingly.

“Notwithstanding the disappointment of last weekend’s Calcutta Cup result, we know that in a very short space of time positive steps have been taken towards the manner and style in which we want to play our rugby.

“We are at the start of what is a completely new cycle of England Rugby. The implementation of new systems does take time and the squad is showing themselves to be hungry to deliver the sort of performance that we know they are capable of.

“From the squad, I have selected a team for Sunday’s fixture that I believe is best placed to meet the specific challenges that Italy will bring. It is a selection of players whose form, individual strengths and combined qualities suit the way we want to play against Italy, in what we anticipate will be another hard-fought and entertaining spectacle.”

England team changes

15:07 , Michael Jones

Steve Borthwick names three changes to the England XV that will take on Italy this Sunday.

Henry Slade recovers from injury and returns to the side at outside centre with Ollie Lawrence starting at inside centre. Captain Owen Farrell moves to fly-half and in the only change to the pack and Jack Willis comes in at openside flanker for Ben Curry.

England won’t panic after Calcutta Cup setback, insists Lewis Ludlam

14:53 , Michael Jones

Lewis Ludlam insists there is no sense of panic after England launched the Steve Borthwick era with a 29-23 defeat by Scotland that placed an early dent in their GuinnessSix Nations title chase.

Gregor Townsend’s side came out on top of a seven-try Calcutta Cup classic to post a third successive victory over the Auld Enemy and register consecutive wins at Twickenham for the first time in the fixture’s 152-year history.

England led by a single point heading into the final 10 minutes but the defensive frailty apparent throughout was exposed again when turbo-charged wing Duhan van der Merwe struck for the second time.

Although not the result to dispel the gloom present for the final year of Eddie Jones’ stewardship, there was much to admire about Borthwick’s first outing as head coach as the buzz returned to Twickenham.

England vs Italy

14:48 , Michael Jones

England victories over Italy have come to be taken as a given by home supporters, which partly explains why there are likely to be empty seats at Twickenham on Sunday afternoon.

But this could be a proper challenge as Steve Borthwick’s side find their feet. Italy showed last week that they are prepared to play fearlessly, while their gameplan to counter France was more nuanced and effective than some suggested.

Will that translate to a more competitive showing against a side they have never beaten? Having been nilled in Rome last year, Kieran Crowley’s funky attack will fancy an examination of an England defence so readily exploited by Scotland last weekend.

Ben Youngs faces uncertain England future after being dropped from squad

14:43 , Michael Jones

Ben Youngs faces an uncertain Test future after he was dropped for England’s Six Nations clash with Italy on Sunday.

England’s most-capped men’s player made a disappointing contribution off the bench in the 29-23 defeat by Scotland that launched Steve Borthwick’s reign and will play no part against the Azzurri.

It is the first time that he has been dropped for a Six Nations match since 2014 and it places a question mark over the 33-year-old involvement’s in the World Cup later this year.

Alex Mitchell has been included in a reduced 29-man squad that will step up preparations for resurgent Italy’s visit to Twickenham in round two, providing support to first choice scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet.

Famous England vs Italy results

14:32 , Michael Jones

Italy have never beaten England but come into Sunday’s match with a strong team and some belief that they can pose a challenge to the underperforming hosts.

Here’s a reminder of a few famous clashes between the two sides from England Rugby:

2011: ENGLAND 59 - 13 ITALY

‘Chris Ashton became the first England player to score four tries in a Six Nations match since 1914 as Martin Johnson’s side beat Italy 59-13 at Twickenham.

‘Ashton bagged the first after just three minutes, supporting the break of Toby Flood to canter under the sticks unopposed, with his trademark swallow dive. His second and third were close range scores, one off the shoulder of Shontayne Hape, and the other a pick-and-go after a strong Matt Banahan carry.

‘Banahan then provided Ashton’s fourth, set loose on an arcing run from inside his own half, he unleashed Ashton on an inside line to go over in the 75th minute. He was joined on the try sheet by Mark Cueto, Mike Tindall, Danny Care and James Haskell, whilst Flood contributed 13 points, and Jonny Wilkinson six.’

Italy have never beaten England but come into Sunday’s match with a strong team and some belief that they can pose a challenge to the underperforming hosts.

Here’s a reminder of a few famous clashes between the two sides from England Rugby:

2017: ENGLAND 36 - 15 ITALY

‘Controversy shrouded the first half of this Anglo-Italian clash at Twickenham, in a Test eventually won by England 36-15.

‘Italy implemented a no ruck tactic that caused confusion on the pitch and around the stadium, giving the home side headaches in the first half. That, along with a Giovanbattista Venditti try and points from the boot of Tommaso Allan saw Conor O’Shea’s men to go in at the break with a 10-5 lead.

‘But two quick second half tries from Danny Care and Elliot Daly put England back in the ascendancy, and although Michele Campagnaro’s score brought it close, a Ben Te’o try, and then two from replacement Jack Nowell saw England run out victors. The win acted as their tenth successive in the Six Nations, and extend their winning streak to 17 matches.’

Here’s a reminder of a few famous clashes between the two sides from England Rugby:

2021: ENGLAND 41 - 18 ITALY

‘Jonny May scored his 32nd Test try against Italy, behind closed doors at Twickenham, to move above Will Greenwood and Ben Cohen to second spot on England Men’s top try scorers list.

‘It was one of six tries scored by England in their second round Six Nations meet, and the most eye-catching of the match, as May showcased incredible acrobatic prowess to leap over the covering tackle of Luca Sperandio to dot down in the corner.

‘Italy had struck inside the opening four minutes courtesy of a Monty Ioane effort, but further scores from Jonny Hill, Jack Willis, Elliot Daly and two Anthony Watson tries sealed the deal for the men in white - Watson’s second, a momentum-shifting intercept, secured the bonus point.’

Henry Slade named in England squad to face Italy after injury

Henry Slade is back from injury and in England’s 36-man squad for Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations clash with Italy at Twickenham.

The centre was ruled out of the defeat to Scotland on Saturday after sustaining a hip problem while on Exeter duty.

London Irish wing Henry Arundell also returns to the fold after injury, while Courtney Lawes (calf) will be in camp as the Northampton man continues rehabilitation work, a squad update from England Rugby said.

England were beaten 29-23 by the Scots in their Calcutta Cup match at the weekend, the team’s first match since Steve Borthwick replaced Eddie Jones as head coach.

It was quite nice – Dan Cole delighted to be back in the England fold

14:08 , Michael Jones

Dan Cole reflects on a job well done rather than catharsis after his first act since emerging from England exile was to force a scrum penalty.

Three years after becoming the fall guy for England’s set-piece disintegration against South Africa in the 2019 World Cup final, the stars aligned against Scotland on Saturday to enable Cole to address that fateful night in Yokohama.

No sooner had the Leicester prop stepped on to the Twickenham pitch as a final-quarter replacement than he was packing down in a scrum that ended with him driving through Pierre Schoeman, securing a penalty.

Although his 96th cap concluded with the Calcutta Cup being taken back to Edinburgh, Cole has taken satisfaction from a first involvement full of poignancy.

More from Borthwick

14:00 , Michael Jones

“I’d seen a habit within the team of conceding points early and not being able to respond to it. We conceded points against Scotland and the biggest thing I was looking at was the response. I thought the response was magnificent.” said the England boss,

“We saw improvement against Scotland in a lot of areas. Some areas didn’t go so well and we need to make sure we get those addressed. Some take longer than others.

“We are trying to rebuild the set-piece here. That takes time. You saw some improvement in our attack.

“In terms of the way we hit in defence, there were improvements there but there were a couple of tries which Scotland took brilliantly, which is immense credit to them.

“I feel disappointed with the result. I asked the players to do some things differently. I have asked the players to play a new way. I have got to get the players to believe in themselves and get the players to bring their strengths to the pitch.

“I want them to play to the best of themselves, which we haven’t seen them do for a while. I think you saw an improvement in that regard against Scotland.”

Borthwick outlines England’s issues

13:53 , Michael Jones

“We know we’ve got a lot of work to do. I’ve been frank from day one in saying there’s a lot of work to do,” said England head coach Steve Borthwick following their defeat to Scotland in the Six Nations opener.

“When I looked at the team in the autumn, when I measured the team and got all the data for the team, we weren’t good at anything. It was as frank as that.

“So we are trying to build some strengths in this team and some bits we are pleased about and some bits we are disappointed about. My job is to make sure we get some improvements for Italy.

“There are multiple areas we have tried to change. You saw some improvement in the scrum against Scotland which I was pleased about because it has been ranked as the worst scrum in tier one rugby.

“We saw some improvements in the attack and speed of ball and we tried to improve the breakdown where England were ranked the ninth quickest, so one of the slowest in tier one.”

New era, same issues for England as Scotland show road ahead

13:47 , Michael Jones

Gregor Townsend savoured the moment. In the week ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations opener, their head coach had planted an asterisk against his side’s 2021 behind-closed-doors win – victory in front of a full Twickenham crowd would be another matter entirely.

There is no need for a caveat now. Come the cool of the February evening it was Scottish lips taking sweet sips from the Calcutta Cup for a third year in succession, the home of English rugby conquered again.

There was plenty of pain during Townsend’s playing days against England: 10 games, nine defeats to the auld enemy. Not since the curtailed Five Nations of 1972 had Scotland won three on the spin against England. But Townsend has forged a squad of history-makers, and as the former fly-half surveyed the landscape of a rivalry transformed under his rule, it was clear just how much it meant.

Youngs may yet be recalled

13:40 , Michael Jones

Ben Youngs is set to miss out on a spot in England’s team for Sunday’s game and when asked to explain Youngs’ omission, defence coach Kevin Sinfield said it was a selection only with Italy in mind and that Youngs could be recalled down the line.

“Our view on selection is probably different to you guys,” he said. “Just because a player has left camp to go home doesn’t mean they’ve been discarded. They’re a massive part of what we’re trying to do and they’ve been outstanding.

“We’ve picked a side based on the opposition and one that we think will give us the best chance of winning.

“The change from last week has not been performance related, it’s to do with the threat that Italy pose and the way we want to play.”

When is England vs Italy?

13:32 , Michael Jones

England vs Italy is due to kick off at 3pm GMT on Sunday 12 February at Twickenham Stadium.

The match is due to be shown live on ITV1, with coverage from 2.15pm GMT. Registered users can stream the game via ITVX.

Steve Borthwick was right – England weren’t good at anything, admits Eddie Jones

13:26 , Michael Jones

Eddie Jones admits that Steve Borthwick was “probably right” when stating he had inherited an England team that “weren’t good at anything”.

Borthwick, who took over from Jones as head coach in December, offered the damning assessment following last Saturday’s 29-23 Six Nations defeat by Scotland at Twickenham.

Jones was sacked after presiding over a dire 2022 and, having now taken charge of Australia, he accepts his attempts to enhance England’s attack created problems.

“Well he’s probably right and that’s part of the problem,” Jones told the podcast EDDIE. “We were trying to morph a team that had had a very good set-piece and very good kicking game.”

What is the team news?

13:19 , Michael Jones

Steve Borthwick is thought to be mulling changes to his England side after a disappointing start to his tenure as head coach. The return of Henry Slade after injury could lead to a different midfield combination, with Owen Farrell perhaps shifting to fly half with Ollie Lawrence and Slade outside him. Henry Arundell is another returnee from injury and is already pushing for a back-three opportunity, which may come from the bench.

The France-based Jack Willis is likelier to feature this week after missing out last, while Alex Mitchell is in line for a second cap with Ben Youngs, England’s most capped male player, not included.

Italy were without first-choice fly half Paolo Garbisi for their Six Nations opener, and it may be that this game also comes too soon for the playmaker. Tommaso Allan is therefore set to continue at fly half, and after a positive start to the tournament, major changes would appear unlikely.

Kieran Crowley could bring Saracens prop Marco Riccioni into his starting side at tighthead, while the New Zealander may also consider starting Edoardo Padovani in the back three - his experience and aerial acumen may be valuable.

Borthwick’s 29-man squad

13:12 , Michael Jones

Here’s the pool from which Borthwick will be selecting his team and bench today:

Forwards: Ollie Chessum (Leicester), Dan Cole (Leicester), Alex Dombrandt (Harlequins), Tom Dunn (Bath), Ben Earl (Saracens), Ellis Genge (Bristol), Jamie George (Saracens) Nick Isiekwe (Saracens), Maro Itoje (Saracens), Lewis Ludlam (Northampton), David Ribbans (Northampton), Kyle Sinckler (Bristol), Mako Vunipola (Saracens), Jack Walker (Harlequins), Jack Willis (Toulouse).

Backs: Henry Arundell (London Irish), Owen Farrell (Saracens), Tommy Freeman (Northampton), Ollie Hassell-Collins (London Irish), Ollie Lawrence (Bath), Max Malins (Saracens), Joe Marchant (Harlequins), Alex Mitchell (Northampton), Henry Slade (Exeter), Fin Smith (Northampton), Marcus Smith (Harlequins), Freddie Steward (Leicester), Manu Tuilagi (Sale), Jack van Poortvliet (Leicester).

Borthwick to drop Smith

13:08 , Michael Jones

The Telegraph are reporting a story by Gavin Mairs that Steve Borthwick is set to drop Marcus Smith for match against Italy with captain Owen Farrell to be handed the fly-half position.

Borthwick is expected to make a number of changes after the defeat to Scotland and the Harlequins No 10 is set to lose his starting spot.

The Smith-Farrell axis that began under Eddie Jones failed to yield positive results again last Saturday despite brief flashes of promise.

England’s midfield is expected to contain Ollie Lawrence and the fit-again Henry Slade whilst Jack Willis is set to assume the openside flanker position, replacing Ben Curry who failed to make a significant impact in his first Test start.

Ben Youngs, England’s most capped scrum-half, was left out of England’s 29-man squad for Sunday after a lacklustre appearance against Scotland. Jack van Poortvliet and Alex Mitchell will share the scrum-half duties in his absence.

England’s Six Nations team announcement for Italy

13:00 , Michael Jones

Steve Borthwick is set to announcement his team squad for England’s next Six Nations match against Italy Scotland on Sunday.

The announcement set for 3pm this afternoon and there may be some changes to the 23-man squad that lost the opening fixture to Scotland last weekend.

The Telegraph are reporting that Marcus Smith will be dropped with captain Owen Farrell to be given the fly-half position.

Borthwick’s team really need to defeat Italy to have any hopes of winning the Six Nations but their opponents impressed in a defeat to France during their first outing.
