It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover has addressed the controversy surrounding Blake Lively's costumes in the film.

Last month, Lively began filming the movie adaption of the author's novel of the same name, however, photos and video of Lively in costume have left book fans concerned.

During her annual Book Bonanza Festival on Friday (June 23), Hoover admitted that she "loves" that the costumes have caused a conversation because it shows that people "care" about the project.

"I don't remember describing outfits at all. I don't care what they have on," Colleen shared with TODAY's Jenna Bush Hager.

She added: "In my head, it's about the conversation they're having and the story. It's the same way in the movie. You've seen a couple of outfits that are completely out of context. I'm not worried about it."

The style of Lily Bloom, who Lively will portray, has been described as "disheveled and hard to predict", as she wears camouflage some days, and sometimes multicoloured baggy sweaters.

But after seeing photos of Blake on set, fans aren't convinced by the outfit choices.

Despite the concerns fans have, though, Hoover believes that when It Ends With Us comes to life on the big screen, the movie people want is the movie they're going to get.

Hoover added that when she saw some footage after visiting the set, she cried "so much" – despite insisting she's not an emotional person.

"You guys are going to be so happy," Hoover said, before affirming: "I'm extremely happy, and now my expectations are up, and I’m going to keep them there."

It Ends With Us, which Hoover published in 2016, takes readers through the lifespan of a relationship between Lily, a 23-year-old who wants to open a floral shop, and Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), a 30-year-old neurosurgeon, that eventually becomes abusive.

It Ends with Us does not currently have a confirmed release date, but fans can expect it in 2024.
