Emmerdale's Charity to struggle as Oscar story continues

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

The following article contains discussion of rape and grooming.

Emmerdale's Charity Dingle continues to face a tough time in Monday's episode (January 8) as her long-lost grandson Oscar Grisham makes a return visit to the village.

Charity is reminded of her traumatic past as Oscar asks difficult questions about his family background – and the timing couldn't be worse as she's also struggling after the recent death of gangster Harry.

Last week, Charity was shocked by the revelation that her son Ryan Stocks and his on-off girlfriend Gail Loman have a child together.

Ryan and Gail put Oscar, who's now 13, up for adoption when he was a few weeks old. The teen recently returned to their lives when he needed a transplant and Gail agreed to help him.

In Monday's episode, Oscar makes another unannounced return and Charity, Gail and Ryan all worry that his adoptive mum Sophie won't be happy.

Sure enough, Sophie bursts into The Woolpack and angrily accuses Charity, Gail and Ryan of conspiring behind her back. Ryan turns the tables by quizzing Sophie on why she lied to keep him and Gail apart from Oscar.

Later, Charity is left in turmoil when Oscar becomes curious over who his grandfather is.

In 2018, Charity confided in then-partner Vanessa Woodfield about how corrupt police detective DI Bails groomed and raped her when she was 14 years old.

A further storyline development explored the fact that Charity was pregnant with Bails' child – Ryan – when she managed to make an escape from her abuser.

In early 2023, Charity received news that Bails had died of a heart attack in his prison cell.

When Charity discloses her age to her grandson, Oscar works out the implications without needing further details.

He reassures Charity that he's glad his grandfather is no longer around and she's relieved by his understanding reaction.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
