We're headed back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by way of the Spider-Man franchise — and no, we're not talking about Tom Holland and Zendaya possibly reprising their roles in Spider-Man 4. There's a new woman-led spin-off movie on the way! Dakota Johnson will star as Sony's first woman superhero in the standalone film Madame Web, directed by S.J. Clarkson.

Details about the highly-anticipated film have slowly come forward, but we've secured some details about the cast and the synopsis. Ahead, find everything we know so far about Madame Web.

Who stars in Madame Web?

News on casting has steadily come to light over the past couple of months. On June 27, Deadline announced that Emma Roberts has signed on to the film’s already star-studded cast. But like many of her co-stars, the specifics of her role are relatively unknown. Adam Scott will also be playing an (unnamed) role in Madame Web.

Tony-nominated actress Isabela Merced will appear in the film, per Deadline. Isabela, known for her roles in Sweet Girl and Spirit Untamed, confirmed the news by reposting the outlet's story on Instagram with the caption, "👀🕷." Her co-star Sydney Sweeney extended support by commenting two fire emojis on Isabela's post.

Celeste O'Connor has also signed on to appear in the Marvel flick, as reported by Deadline on May 24. As mentioned, the actor's exact role has yet to be announced. Celeste previously starred in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and currently acts alongside Joey King in the Paramount+ film The In-Between.

Back in March, Deadline confirmed that Euphoria breakout star Sydney Sweeney has joined Dakota Johnson and the rest of the Madame Web cast in an unnamed role.

On August 4, Deadline confirmed Flight Attendant star Zosia Mamet is the newest addition to the cast of Madame Web. Zosia previously starred in HBO's hit Lena Dunham series Girls and AMC's Mad Men.

What will Madame Web be about?

According to Deadline, Madame Web "will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world." If the film will be solely based on the Madame Web comic book series, then viewers are in for a treat. Madame Web, a mutant, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comic No. 210. Stricken with a lifetime of blindness and a chronic autoimmune disorder, Cassandra Webb, an elderly woman, experienced great neurological deterioration throughout her life. According to Marvel, she specializes in predicting the future of Spider-related superheroes. She even mentored Spider-Man and spearheaded a group of superheroes who would go on to be called Spider-Woman.

Madame Web was placed in a coma and suffered from short-term memory loss after she tried to help Spider-Man prevent the assassination of a political figure. Once she regains her memory, she reunites with Spider-Man and asks him to retrieve one of the required artifact fragments that would aid in the arcane ritual of Gathering of the Five to save her life. Of the five options knowledge, power, immortality, insanity, or death, Spider-Man helps her receive immortality, which helps her revert to a younger, healthier version of herself.

Has Madame Web wrapped filming yet?

Yes! Details about the upcoming Madame Web film have been kept under wraps. Still, the movie's lead actress, Dakota Johnson, confirmed to Variety that filming of the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick has officially wrapped. "It was a wild experience," she recounted. I don't think you can be prepped to go into anything like that, but I learned so much."

The Lost Daughter actor also opened up about how production for Madame Web gave her another perspective on filmmaking. "It's a completely different way of making films, you know? And then, I went into making of my company's tiny, tiny little movies right after, so I got a real taste of different kinds of cinema last year."

According to The Patriot Ledger, Madame Web began filming on July 11, 2022, in Boston and its surrounding areas. The crew will also film in a local fighter-jet hangar called the Hangout, which spans over 33,000 square feet.

Cast member Emma Roberts also recently spilled some details about the production. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight on August 30, the actress kept mostly hush-hush about her character and the plot line, but revealed that she was “going back to shoot a few more scenes soon, so we'll just have to see.” She continued to describe her time on set as “really fun.”

“I have to say, I was so excited to get to join the cast. I love Dakota Johnson. I love Sydney Sweeney. It’s a really, really unique cast and story, so I’m really excited. It’s been really fun to work with everyone,” Emma added. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it, for real, because it’s so cool.”

Production is currently searching for extras and experienced EMTs, law enforcement, firefighters, and precision drivers to fill background roles, listing the movie under the code name "Claire" in a casting call posted by Kendall Cooper Casting. The team is also currently searching for cars from 2003 or earlier.

When is Madame Web coming out?

The first of its kind for Sony Pictures, Madame Web was originally set for a July 7, 2023 release. The studio later announced that the film’s release date was pushed to October 6, 2023, and they recently announced that the release date will be delayed once more. Madame Web will now officially be released on February 16, 2024, so we'll have to wait a little while longer to see Sony's first female superhero movie.

Sony's other Marvel movie Kraven the Hunter has taken over Madame Web's October 6th, 2023 release date and will premiere then. Deadline reported that Sony pushed another Marvel film from October 6, 2023 (aka Madame Web's new release date) to June 7, 2024, and speculated that this unnamed film could potentially be the next Spider-Man film. Guess we'll have to wait and see... 👀
