Emily Hampshire Issues Apology Over 'Insensitive' Johnny Depp Costume

Emily Hampshire

Emily Hampshire has apologized for her "insensitive" Halloween costume that seemed to poke fun at the defamation suit between exes Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.

The Schitt's Creek star, 42, took to Instagram on Wednesday, Nov. 1, to issue a statement condemning her own actions and apologizing for any hurt she may have caused.

"I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I have ever done," Hampshire began in the text post. "For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard."

As she continued, Hampshire noted that she was "deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe," adding, "Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions."

"In the future I will do better. I'm so sorry," she concluded.

For those blissfully unaware of the drama, Hampshire was criticized by fans over her decision to dress up as Depp while her friend went as Heard, with one X (formerly Twitter) user calling the decision "a special kind of depraved" noting that the former couple's trial has been done with for over a year.

Another social media user posed the question of Hampshire would "think this was a good idea" in the first place. "dressing as a DV/SA victim at the worst time in her life. and perpetuating a lie made to humiliate her. congrats i guess," they wrote in part.

Though the photos Hampshire originally shared of the costumes have since been deleted from her social media pages, though screenshots of what the Boy Meets Girl alum had posted on Halloween can still be found circulating online.
