Emergency room staff — ‘Heroes to Zeroooos’ — win huge Powerball prize in Michigan

A group of emergency room heroes are celebrating a huge Powerball win — one with lots of “zeroes” on the check.

The Michigan lottery club — aptly named “Heroes to Zeroooos” — includes emergency room doctors, nurses and other health care staff who pitch in to buy lottery tickets.

“The Heroes to Zeroooos lottery club started several years ago,” club representative BJ Bossert Jr. told lottery officials. “There are about 65 members who consistently play, but anyone can throw in money whenever they choose.”

When Bossert Jr. went to buy a Powerball ticket at a CVS pharmacy in Traverse City, 78 members had a chance at a group win, according to a Jan. 5 news release from the Michigan Lottery.

That ticket — with numbers 13-19-36-39-59 — matched the five white balls in the Oct. 31 drawing, officials said. That means the Powerball ticket was worth $1 million.

“(I) checked the results the next morning at about 4:30 a.m.,” Bossert Jr. told lottery officials. “When I saw we had won $1 million, I was in shock! I posted in the Facebook group and said I had a special announcement coming later that day and planned to share the good news when I was done with work.

“A few hours later, I posted an article on the Facebook page about a $1 million winning Powerball ticket being sold in Traverse City,” he continued. “After I shared the article, club members began frantically reaching out asking if it was our club who had won, and that’s when I shared the big news!”

The members were “ecstatic,” Bossert Jr. said, adding that the cash is “a nice bonus for all of us around the holidays.”

This week, each of the emergency room employees met at MiddleCoast Brewing Company, where their checks were presented. When divided 78 ways, each member received about $12,800.
