Elton John made history at the Emmys tonight!

The star becomes just the 19th person to join the exclusive club of EGOT winners—people who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award in competitive categories (not an honorary award). Before John, the last person to EGOT was Viola Davis.

John began his road to EGOT with a Grammy win in 1987, winning Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group for "That's What Friends Are For" with Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder. (He went on to win four more Grammys). He then won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," from The Lion King, in 1995, and then in 2000, scored a Tony Award for his score to Aida. He completed it this evening with an Emmy win for Best Live Variety Special. (In those years, he also won four more Grammys, and another Oscar, making it EGGGGGOOT?)

"I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight," John said in a statement. "The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful."

He was not at the Emmys this evening, so executive producers Ben Winston Gabe Turner accepted the award on his behalf.

"We knew this show would be historic because it was Elton’s last ever show in North America on tour, we knew it’d be historic because it was Disney’s first ever live stream, we didn’t know it was going to be historic because it was going to win a man, who has created the soundtrack to all of our lives, who has done so much great for society, who is all of our heroes, we didn’t know it was going to win him an EGOT," Winston said.

Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium is currently streaming on Disney+.
