Elton John? Gradey Dick’s ‘ruby slippers’ look scores mixed reactions at NBA Draft

Former University of Kansas basketball star Gradey Dick clearly got the memo before walking the NBA Draft red carpet Thursday: If you’re going to walk a red carpet make a statement or what’s the point?

The Wichita native scored ALL the style points in a red sequined shirt and jacket by Dolce & Gabbana that dazzled even brighter than Dorothy’s ruby slippers, which was the point of his Kansas-themed look.

“So I’m from Kansas,” Dick said in a video shared on Twitter by the NBA. “Dorothy has her little slippers, I’ve got my Dorothy suit.”

(Many thanks to his stylist for not dressing him in yellow and brown like a sunflower, assuming he had a stylist.)

The suit jacket — with a matching turtleneck underneath — had exaggerated shoulder pads that screamed ‘80s power suit, or MC Hammer. Are shoulder pads back? Maybe.

A few days go Dick posted a portrait of himself on Instagram wearing a more understated grey plaid Dolce & Gabbana suit with well-padded shoulders. Dolce & Gabbana appears to be his go-to designer of the moment. His red carpet sunglasses also were reportedly Dolce & Gabbana.

His Wizard of Oz jacket was paired with Christian Louboutin loafers — presumably because their famous red soles matched the suit. They appeared to be the French design house’s Our George’s L lug sole city shoes that retail for about $1,100.

He iced the outfit with a custom diamond necklace sporting his new logo. He has posed before wearing jewelry by Jason of Beverly Hills, a California jeweler popular with professional athletes.

Bling, bling and more bling was clearly a theme on the red carpet. Scoot Henderson’s suit embellished with gaudy crystals and a colorful grill on his bottom teeth made Keyonte George and Kobe Bufkin’s sparkle-less suits, by comparison, look like prom outfits.

But it was Dick’s outfit that quickly went viral, inviting comparisons to Elton John, comedian Andy Dick and Ben Stiller in “Zoolander.”

Here are some of Twitter’s other takes on the Dorothy look.
