Elon Musk Documentary in the Works from an Oscar Winner

Elon Musk is certainly a polarizing figure. The South African son of business magnate/sketchy emerald mine owner Errol Musk, is the uber-wealthy founder of SpaceX and Tesla. At various points, the billionaire has been the richest man in the world, and most recently he's been in the news for his purchasing of Twitter, his controversial handling of the company and its rebranding as X. While some praise the businessman and investor for his savvy Tesla dealings, others have labeled him as a nepo-baby who got lucky. His social media posts, press conferences and hot takes have fueled both his supporters and detractors.

With Musk as such a larger-than-life figure, it only makes sense that he would be the subject of much scrutiny, and just last month, a 688-page biography entitled Elon Musk by famed biography Walter Isaacson hit bookshelves. Now, Musk is the subject of a documentary from the Oscar-winning director of Taxi to the Dark Side, Alex Gibney. Here's everything you need to know about Gibney's Elon Musk documentary, simply titled Musk:

What is the release date of the Elon Musk documentary, Musk?

There is currently no release date for Musk. The documentary from Alex Gibney was shopped at the 2023 Cannes International Film Festival, where the United States distribution rights were bought by HBO. The film, however, did not screen publicly at Cannes, and has not been screened since. A 2024 release date seems most likely.

What is the title of Alex Gibney's Elon Musk documentary?

Alex Gibney's documentary on Elon Musk is simply titled Musk. This is not to be confused with Walter Isaacson's biography Elon Musk.

Where can I watch the upcoming Elon Musk documentary, Musk?

Currently no concrete release plans for Musk have been announced. The film, however, was acquired by HBO, so it will most likely stream there. Whether there will be a theatrical or festival run, however, is unknown.

What is the new Elon Musk documentary, Musk, about?

We know very little about the documentary other than it is a "definitive and unvarnished examination of multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter," according to Gibney. Gibney, however, is known for his takedowns of organizations like Enron, the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Scientology and Theranos, so this will likely be more of an exposé than a hagiographic portrait of Musk.

Is there a trailer for the new Elon Musk documentary, Musk?

No, there is not. Since the film has yet to announce a release date, there is no trailer. The trailer will likely be dropped closer to the documentary's release, whenever that is announced.

Was Elon Musk involved in the production of Musk?

He does not appear to be. While Musk was shadowed for two years for Walter Isaacson's biography, it doesn't appear that he is cooperating with Gibney's project. When the film was originally announced in spring of 2023, Musk responded to a Tweet saying, "It's a hit piece." A "hit piece" is a piece of journalism that is written primarily to make someone look bad.

Is the documentary Musk based off of Walter Isaacson's biography Elon Musk?

No. While some documentaries are based off of books, and both projects are coming out around the same time, Musk and Elon Musk are completely separate from one another, aside from the same subject at the center of both.
