Elmira police identify victim in May 20 fatal shooting, mum on possible suspects

Police have released the name of the victim of a fatal shooting Monday night outside a bar on Elmira's Northside.

The victim was identified as Norman D. Cherry, 43, no address given, according to the Elmira Police Department.

Cherry was shot shortly before 11 p.m. Monday outside Gush's Thirsty Bear, 351 E. Washington Ave., police said.

Prior to police arrival on the scene, he was transported to a local hospital by a private vehicle, and was later pronounced dead.

Elmira police conducted an investigation at the shooting scene, and were assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and West Elmira Police Department, along with the Elmira Fire Department and Erway Ambulance.

The investigation into Monday's shooting is continuing and police are not releasing any information about possible suspects or any other details of the case.

Police are asking anyone who might have information about the shooting to contact the Elmira Police Department Detective Bureau at 607-737-5623.
