Elizabeth Warren admits she intended to tank Bloomberg’s candidacy at debate

Just hours after suspending her campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, Elizabeth Warren sat down with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow where they spoke about the part Warren played in bringing Mike Bloomberg’s brief campaign to an end. In Bloomberg’s first moments with his fellow candidates on the debate stage, Warren all but put an end to his candidacy.

“I’d like to talk about who we’re running against,” Warren said. “A billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians. And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump, I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg.”

Bloomberg ended his campaign after poor showings in most primaries, and Warren is more than happy to take credit.

“A lot of postmortems on his campaign credit you, basically, with single-handedly tanking his candidacy with the way you took him apart in that debate. Do you — is that what you were trying to do?” Maddow asked. Warren simply answered, “Yes.” “Do you take credit?” “Ah, sure.”

One reason Warren said Bloomberg was the riskiest candidate is because, unlike her other competitors, he has too much in common with President Trump, and wouldn’t be able to go after the president in the same ways as the other candidates.

“Think about the things we are gonna need to talk about,” Warren said. “Hiding your taxes, history with women, embracing racist policies, when you’re in charge helping bazillionaires and leaving everyone else behind. Shoot, he wouldn’t even be able to launch the autocrat argument against him because Michael Bloomberg’s the guy who, when he was mayor, literally got the change in the laws so he could hang onto power longer.”

In fact, Warren thought Bloomberg’s candidacy was just an all-around bad idea.

“From my perspective, the idea that a billionaire would just spend enough money to buy his way onto the stage and then not be able to be an effective candidate against Donald Trump,” Warren said, “that was not … not good for democracy, a billionaire buying his way on. And not good for Democrats, a guy who I think would have had the worst chance against Donald Trump.”
