Elizabeth Lambert runs best race as Erie Mason tops two league foes

ERIE – Elizabeth Lambert was angry.

It had nothing to do with the miserable weather she had to run in Tuesday.

The Erie Mason junior was mad at herself.

She could do no better that fifth place in the 800 meters during a meet against Whiteford and Summerfield.

Lambert quickly erased memories of that race when she took the track for a little while later for the 3,200 meters.

She fought through the constant rain and cool temperatures to run the race of her life.

Lambert won in 13:10.48, shaving 30 seconds off her previous lifetime best. She was nearly a minute and a half faster than anyone else in the field.

“Sometimes kids get frustrated,” Erie Mason girls coach Julie Ravary said. “You never know how they will react. She didn’t have the race she wanted earlier (in the 800). She is the kind of kid that uses every bit of frustration and anger to motivate her.”

Bad breaks: Airport's Ortega battles through injury-filled year

Both Erie Mason teams were motivated Tuesday.

The boys and girls both swept their opponents to take an important step forward in the Tri-County Conference race.

The girls beat Whiteford 90-45 and Summerfield 102-33. The boys triumphed over Whiteford 76-6 and Summerfield 108-29.

Whiteford beat Summerfield 78-56 in the girls meet and 103.5-33.5 for the boys.

“We’re off to a little better start than last year,” Ravary said. “Last year we were not quite ready for our first meets. That motivated us to change that. We are more prepared early in the year and working harder.

“The girls are paying attention to details in practice.”

Not even the miserable weather could stop the Eagles.

“Most of the times today were not good,” Ravary said. “Today was more fighting like a dog for every point you could get.”
