Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel have both paid a sweet tribute to their Elf co-star James Caan following the sad news that he had passed away on Wednesday (July 6) at the age of 82.

The three actors co-starred in the classic Christmas movie back in 2003, in which Ferrell played Buddy the elf, Deschanel portrayed his love interest Jovie, and Caan was Buddy's grinchy-turned-lovable father Walter.

Taking to Twitter to reminisce on her time spent working with Caan, Deschanel posted a photo of him and Ferrell in action as the father/son duo, writing: "James Caan was a true delight. My favorite memory of him was shooting part of a montage for the end of Elf and he started playing piano – he played beautifully – I sang and he played and I was just astonished by his talent!"

Replying to the Tweet she further added: "I think he was just capable of so many things and that's what made him such a wonderful actor. I was so honored to have worked with him."

In a statement about his on-screen dad, Ferrell said (via The Hollywood Reporter): "I will always treasure my time spent on and off camera with James Caan. He always had great stories and advice. Without him, a movie like Elf doesn't work"

Caan's decades-long career included a number of memorable roles, the most notable of which was his Oscar nominated role as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Other movie's he's known for include Misery, Thief, Brian's Song, Rollerball, Hide in Plain Sight, The Gambler, El Dorado and Funny Lady.
