Electric Porsche Macan Will Make 595 HPPorsche

The all-electric Porsche Macan is well on its way to production. The company confirmed back in 2019 the next version of its popular crossover would be going EV, and since then, we've been given few details. Now, thanks to an Autocar interview with Macan powertrain manager Antoon Janssen, we know a whole lot more.

The Macan EV will ride on Porsche's Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, which also underpins the automaker's other electric car, the Taycan. Two permanently excited electric motors, one for each axle, will be standard to power all four wheels, getting power from a 100-kWh battery. The motors share a similar design to the versions in the Taycan, but they've been reworked with a new magnet arrangement to deter power losses, according to Autocar. The changes result in a total output of 595 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, says the U.K. publication.

Details on powertrain weren't the only things Janssen revealed to Autocar. He also told the publication development is focusing on the car's dynamics, with the car getting new two-valve dampers, rear-wheel steering, and a more aggressively staggered set of tires. The rear motor, Janssen says, was pushed as far back into the car as possible to improve weight distribution to 48 percent at the front and 52 percent at the rear, maximizing traction during acceleration. More expensive versions of the Macan EV will even get a limited-slip differential out back to improve traction during cornering.

The electric Porsche Macan is set to go on sale in 2024 following delays from VW Group's software division, says Autocar. Pricing has yet to be revealed, though we suspect the EV will be a bit more expensive than the gas version when it goes on sale.
