Elbow grease: Volunteers help spring clean homes as part of Operation Fresh Start

Several Wichita Falls homes received a makeover on the morning of May 11 as part of Operation Fresh Start.

For about seven years now, this program has sent volunteers out into the community in designated areas to help clean up neighborhoods and renovate homes for homeowners.

Operation Fresh Start is an organization hosted by the New Jerusalem Baptist Church and powered by volunteers from the Navy, Air Force, Army and local community, as well as a few Hirschi High School students.

On May 11, each represented military branch worked on a home — painting, raking, mowing and taking out trash — while engaging in friendly competition with each other.

The Rev. Angus Thompson, New Jerusalem Baptist Church pastor, said the homeowners are the true winners.

The church hopes to leave the areas cleaner than when they started. Operation Fresh Start will host another event in the fall season.

The organization began in 2017 to raise money for Hirschi’s athletic department, revitalize the community with cleanup efforts and support children, families and seniors in the community.
