El Paso amateur boxer Kayla Gomez wins National Golden Gloves title at 119 pounds

El Paso amateur boxer Kayla Gomez claimed a National Golden Gloves championship on Saturday at Huntington Place in Detroit.

Gomez defeated Atiana Edwards from the Colorado/New Mexico team by unanimous decision in the 119-pound division. Gomez was representing Team Texas. In the semifinals, she defeated Erniece Dawson of Washington, D.C., by 5-0 decision and in the quarterfinals she defeated Emma Plaxco of Wisconsin by stoppage.

Gomez earned her trip to the national tourney by winning the Texas state championship earlier year. Saturday's title was her 17th career national title, including her second Golden Gloves title.

"I was able to showcase my boxing skills," Gomez said. "I felt strong in all of my fights, and I fought three really good fighters. I stayed focused and was consistent in what I was trying to accomplish"
