Egyptian court acquits men accused of abusing elderly Christian woman

Three men accused of stripping an elderly Coptic Christian woman and parading her through streets in southern Egypt in 2016 were acquitted Thursday.

The men were sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison in January before an Egyptian criminal court cleared them in a retrial, The Associated Press reported, citing state media.

A mob attacked the 70-year-old woman after rumors spread that her son was romantically involved with a Muslim woman, according to The AP.

Christians make up a sliver of Egypt’s population and have long faced discrimination in the country, underscored in recent years by deadly attacks including church bombings.
