Education roundup: Stark State sets open house; organizations offer scholarships

JACKSON TWP. − Stark State College plans an open house for prospective students from 5 to 7 p.m. March 21 at the main campus, 6200 Frank Ave. NW. Learn about the admissions process, talk with faculty and staff about the college’s 200-plus associate degrees and certificates, learn about student services and resources and take a tour.

Financial aid staff also will be on hand to help students and parents look at financial aid, submit their FAFSA applications and discuss scholarship opportunities. Stark State has more than $3 million in scholarships to award incoming students based on criteria and applicant eligibility. High school seniors can attend an informational session at 4:30 p.m. to learn more.

Scholarship applications being accepted

The Stark County Retired Teachers' Association is offering five $3,000 scholarships to college students. Applicants must have graduated from a Stark County high school, be enrolled in an accredited college or university, be a junior or senior in the field of education and have a minimum of a 2.5 grade-point average. There are no age limitations.

Applications are available at http://www.scrta.net. Completed applications should be sent to Mrs. Rosalie Dolan, P.O. Box 935, Massillon OH 44648, and be postmarked by May 18.

Camp Canopy scholarships available to high school students

MASSILLON − Stark Soil and Water Conservation District offers Camp Canopy scholarships to interested Stark County high school students. Camp Canopy is open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors (up to 19 years of age). The Sunday through Friday camp occurs June 9-14 and is held at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in Carrollton.

Applicants must be current Stark County residents. Scholarships will cover the cost of camp, including meals and programs ($450 value). The scholarship winners will be responsible for their own transportation to and from camp and for any spending money they wish to take to camp.

The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. April 20. Accepted applicants will be notified May 9. Stark SWCD will provide registration information for attendees that must be submitted directly to Camp Canopy. The attendees need only submit the registration and health forms.

Lake Local starts kindergarten registration

LAKE TWP. − Lake Local School District is now registering children for kindergarten. Lake Local Schools has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service. To register your kindergarten student, go to the Lake Local webpage www.lakelocal.org. Click Registration and then PreRegistration for Kindergarten. You will then be directed to set up a FinalForms account. Parents/guardians will find a page with step-by-step instructions on how to log-in and create an account for their new kindergartner or add a new kindergartner to a current account.

When the FinalForms tabs are finished and signed, the required documents need to be uploaded into FinalForms to complete the registration. No student will be officially enrolled and eligible to start classes until all required forms and documentation are completed, received and approved. Proof of residency requirements and enrollment requirements are listed on the kindergarten registration page.

Malone University gets funding for Ohio Teacher Bootcamp

CANTON − Malone University is one of eight institutions in the state to receive approval and funding to participate in the Ohio Teacher Bootcamp Program. Malone will receive up to $25,000 to offer upskilling experiences for Ohio K-12 educators in a variety of sectors.

Ohio's Teacher Bootcamp Program provides reimbursement to approved colleges and universities for tuition costs of coursework taken by teachers to upskill themselves, according to a news release. Qualifying coursework is to be delivered in bootcamp format and may include Continuing Education Units or graduate credit coursework.

During the bootcamps, teachers learn about which skills the businesses in their region are looking for by participating in local tours and completing related coursework. Through these experiences, teachers are exposed to new industries and jobs so they can better prepare students to be career-ready upon graduation.

Mount Union nets approval for master of nursing program

ALLIANCE − The Higher Learning Commission has approved the University of Mount Union’s new master of science in nursing, with applications now being accepted for the first start date in August.

The Mount Union MSN degree offers a concentration in family nurse practitioner, a 46-hour program that can be completed in 22 months.

The Higher Learning Commission also approved Mount Union’s emergency nurse practitioner certification with its MSN degree program. Those who previously earned an FNP can also earn this certification as a standalone offering. The start date for those interested in the standalone emergency nurse practitioner certification will be May 2025.

Akron Bar Foundation accepting scholarship, grant applications

The Akron Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Association, is accepting scholarship and grant applications for 2024-25. The deadline for all applications is April 1.

The Akron Bar Foundation Scholarship (2024-25 school year) is for law students who have a financial need, are in good academic standing with their school, have a history of community involvement, have an affiliation with Summit County (live or have lived, attended school, parents are from, etc.), will be attending a law school in Ohio, and are U.S. citizens. Qualified students will be contacted to arrange an interview, which will take place in April. Mail completed applications to The Akron Bar Foundation, Attention: Deb Poland, director of foundation and community relations, 57 S. Broadway St., Akron OH 44308.

The Law Library Grant promotes legal research in the Akron/Summit County area, or other geographic locale and/or provides support for legal, educational or literary research or the operation of libraries or other research services, for the legal profession, according to a news release.
