Edison Public Library getting first renovation in 37 years. Here's what's planned

EDISON – The Edison Public Library is set to undergo a $1.8 million renovation that will update the teen center, Makerspace and study rooms and improve the WiFi and print management systems.

The work is scheduled to begin around May 13 and take place in phases, with work on one floor at a time, allowing the library to remain open during the anticipated 8 to 10 months of construction.

“We are excited for work to begin; this is long overdue and we look forward to, once complete, providing residents access to a renovated library that will be a place where people feel welcome to sit, relax, study, and engage,” said Edison Public Library Director Allan M. Kleiman. “We have envisioned this project for some time and are looking forward to modernizing the building to better serve the community.”

The project, being done by Manasquan-based Meyer Construction, is being financed solely through the library budget and at no additional cost to taxpayers.

“Due to our fiscal responsibility, the library board was able to put aside monies over the past four years strictly for capital improvements,” said Edison Public Library Board President Pat Massey.

The Main Library, located at 340 Plainfield Ave. between Route 27 and the Edison train station, opened in 1965. The building was expanded in 1975 and again in 1987. The new update will mark the first major renovation to the library in 37 years.

While the renovation work is underway at the Main Library, there may be intermittent disruptions and limited access to services and materials. Patrons can continue to access Edison’s Online Library, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can stop by the North Edison branch at 777 Grove Ave., or the Clara Barton branch at 141 Hoover Ave.
