Eau Claire, Chippewa, Dunn Counties announce programs to commemorate Memorial Day

Memorial Day will soon be upon us, and several areas have announced their plans to help mark the occasion.

The holiday, which will be observed this coming Monday, is a day to honor the members of America’s various military branches who have lost their lives in service to their country. Below is a lost of commemorations that can be found throughout the holiday weekend.

EAU CLAIRE AREASATURDAY, MAY 25: There will be a two cemetery memorial and decoration events, one at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, 1500 Buffington Drive. The next will take place at 11 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, 822 Emery St. Both events will feature a combined Honor Guard. SUNDAY, MAY 26: St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 1915 Hogeboom Ave., will have a special Memorial Day service with a veterans organization line-up at 8:30 a.m. and a worship service at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Jeannette Stabenow at 715-832-0544.

The VFW Post 723 has also announced a car show swap meet on Sunday at 2900 W. Folsom St. The event includes a breakfast from 7-11:45 a.m. and a lunch at noon with grilled chicken, brats and hot dogs.

MONDAY, MAY 27: The Eau Claire Memorial Day Parade will have its lineup at 8:30 a.m. and will start at Wilson Park, crossing Lake Street Bridge and ending just past Owen Park. The parade’s official start time is 9:30 a.m.

Following the parade at Owen Park will be a Memorial Day program featuring the North High School Band, and several speakers including City Council President Emily Berge, Sen. Jeff Smith, Rep. Jodi Emerson and more.

The American Legion Post 53 will host a post-Memorial Day program chicken feed event around noon on Monday at 634 Water St. It is a potluck feed with chicken provided, but donations are encouraged.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY

The Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council will observe Memorial Day at the following times and locations:

SUNDAY, MAY 26: 10 a.m. at the Bateman Cemetery, corner of Highways X and K, town of Lafayette.

MONDAY, MAY 27: 9 a.m., Prairie View Cemetery, 4061 N. Prairie View Road, Lake Hallie.

There will also be a Chippewa Falls Memorial Day parade starting at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, with the parade starting at the corner of N. Bridge and Willow streets, heading north on Bridge Street to Irvine Park.

At 11 a.m., a Memorial Day program will take place at the Irvine Park Memorial Bandstand.

DUNN COUNTY

MONDAY, MAY 27: The Menomonie Patriotic Council will present Navy and Korean War veteran Don Roberts to speak at 9:30 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 13th St. N. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. In the case of heavy rain, the event will instead take place at Kyote’s Den, E2339 Highway 29.

Johnson-Whistler American Legion Post 343 and AMVETS Post 72 will commemorate the holiday at Hay River Cemetery (7:45 a.m.), Zion Cemetery (8:30 a.m.), New Haven Cemetery (9:15 a.m.), Connorsville Lutheran Cemetery (9:45 a.m.), Chimney Rock (10:15 a.m.) and Hay River Town Hall (11 a.m.).

The AMVETS Post 72 and Wheeler VFW will continue at Wheeler Cemetery (11:30 a.m.) and the Boyceville Tiffany Cemetery (12:15 p.m.). The AMVETS will continue to Lucas Cemetery (1 p.m.) and conclude with the Menomonie Guard at Potters Field in Menomonie (3 p.m.).
