EastEnders’ Navin Chowdhry says Nish’s return will divide viewers

EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry has said that his character Nish Panesar’s return to the show will divide viewers.
Next week, Nish is set to make a dramatic comeback to Albert Square after being away since February.
In Monday’s episode (May 27), he will show up at the doorstep unexpectedly with divorce paperwork, something which Suki is less than pleased about.

On Nish’s former wife’s reaction, actor Chowdhry said: "She’s shocked and horrified. Nish has been out of the family’s lives for the past three months, and Suki is sharing a beautifully loving moment with Eve as they come down to breakfast, and he suddenly turns up."
The family are hostile towards him and Suki changes the locks, but Nish manages to manipulate his granddaughter Amani into letting him inside the house.
There is another reason for Nish’s return though, as he later reveals to his family that he is dying – but the Panesars aren’t convinced by his bombshell.
"Nobody believes him," Chowdhry explained. "It’s an indication of what Nish is capable of that he can turn up after three months away, tell them he’s dying, and his family don’t believe a word of it. This distrust is the emotion that he’s inspired within his own family."

Nish returns to Walford remorseful for his previous actions, but Chowdhry predicts that viewers will have differing opinions on whether his fresh start is genuine.
"I think that’s something the audience will have to debate," he said. "In subsequent episodes, it’s something that will divide people and be open to a lot of speculation. What is presented is that Nish’s whole reason for coming back is to make up for lost time and reconnect and gain forgiveness from his family.
"You could argue that he wants to make up for all he’s lost and the pain he’s inflicted on others. It’s the chance for him to seek the ultimate redemption from those he loves most and who he has hurt the most. But he’s also someone with nothing to lose…"
EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
