EastEnders explains Ben's shock arrest in early iPlayer release

EastEnders spoilers follow from Monday's episode (March 25), which is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders' Ben Mitchell has been accused of committing fraud in the show's latest episode.

The departing character was left shellshocked as a previous crime came back to haunt him at the worst possible time, marking the beginning of his exit plot.

Monday's edition, which is streaming now on BBC iPlayer, saw Ben come under pressure to give his husband Callum Highway the birthday celebration he deserved.

When Jay Brown and Lexi Pearce both called out Ben for not organising something special, he hastily arranged a surprise birthday party at the Queen Vic.

Although Ben's low-key gesture went down well with Callum, the couple's day took a dramatic turn for the worse as police interrupted the party.

Walford police detective DC Crawford told Ben: "There's an international warrant out for you. I'm arresting you for fraud, allegedly committed on your trip to the United States last year."

Mortified to be arrested in front of his family, Ben cooperated by heading outside with the detective.

When Ben's mum Kathy Beale witnessed the drama, she anxiously demanded an explanation but Ben seemed bewildered by his predicament.

Spoilers for this week have already revealed the aftermath of Ben's arrest, which includes Callum struggling to support his husband after his latest mistake.

The Mitchells' trusty solicitor Ritchie Scott is brought on board to help Ben, while Lexi pays an emotional visit to her dad at the police station as the stakes get higher.

Ben travelled to the US last year as he desperately tried to get Lola Pearce-Brown signed up for an experimental cancer trial. This caused him to tragically miss a chance to say goodbye to Lola as he didn't return to Walford in time before she passed away.

EastEnders announced in December last year that Ben will be leaving the show. Max Bowden has played the current incarnation of Ben since 2019.

A show spokesperson told Digital Spy at the time: "Max will be leaving EastEnders [in 2024]. We wish him all the best for the future."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
