Early voting for May 21 primaries in Athens area begins Monday

Early voting in Georgia for the May 21 primaries begins on Monday. Voting will take place in the Republican, Democratic and non-partisan elections.

Many elected positions will be unopposed in their primaries setting up for contested races in the November election.

Voters will face a number of questions posed on ballots for Republican and Democratic votes. The questions range from elections practices to immigration issues on the Republican ballots and assault weapons to library books on the Democratic ballots.

Voters should check their local board of elections websites for places and times for election.

In Athens, people can vote at the Board of Elections office at 155 East Washington St. the first week of voting through May 15.

Then on Saturday, May 11, other precinct offices will open at the Miriam Moore Community Center, 410 McKinley Drive; Athens-Clarke Library, 2025 Baxter St.; ACC Cooperative Extension, 275 Cleveland Road; ACC Tennis center, 4460 Lexington Road; and, Winterville Cultural Center, 371 N. Church St. These neighborhood sites will also host voters on May 13 and May 15.

In Oconee County all advance voting is held at the county’s Administrative Building, 7635 Macon Highway, Watkinsville, from April 29 through May 17. Saturday voting is scheduled for May 4 and May 11.

Besides some elected offices, voters in Oconee County will vote on a Homestead Exemption measure that affects taxation for residents 65 years old or over and those 75 years old and older.
