The Philadelphia Eagles were a bit quiet in free agency this offseason, giving out almost no big deals to free agents. But they may have saved their best signing for last as they just signed the top free agent cornerback.

According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent Steven Nelson to a one-year deal. Per the report, the deal is worth over $4 million.

Nelson is a six-year NFL veteran who spent the last two seasons as the starting right corner for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In those two seasons he started 30 games, defending 17 passes with three picks, two fumble recoveries and 109 tackles.

Prior to joining the Steelers, Nelson played four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, logging two seasons with double-digit passes defended. He had a career-high four interceptions for the Chiefs in 2018 before joining the Steelers on a three-year, $25.5 million contract.

Nelson requested his contract with the Steelers be terminated after the second year of the deal.

Offense was the area where the Philadelphia Eagles had their most prominent struggles in 2020. But that doesn’t exactly excuse the defense, which gave up 418 points – their third-most in franchise history.

But with limited cap space to work with, the Eagles couldn’t exactly spend big addressing their defense this offseason.

Steven Nelson will be given a lot of responsibilities as soon as he enters training camp with the Eagles. Hopefully he can be the defensive difference maker they sorely need.

How would you grade the Philadelphia Eagles signing Steven Nelson?
