Dwyane Wade's love of style and self-care is in his blood.

The retired NBA star, 42, explained in a recent interview with fashion and lifestyle brand Highsnobietythat he learned how to dress and take care of himself from his father, Dwyane Wade Sr. and the other men in his family.

"My father has always been a man who would take care of himself. My uncles took care of themselves," Wade said. "I always knew that’s what I wanted to do: I wanted to be one of them sharp-dressed men who smelled good, who stayed clean-shaved, and all that.”

“I’ve been getting my nails painted since 2007,” he continued of his self-care routine.

Wade admitted that when he meets people, he notices what they're wearing. “I’m all about scanning details of people, because it shows you a lot about how people care about themselves."

The businessman and father of four takes getting dressed very seriously.

"Me and my body, we love putting on clothes," he said. “It’s not something I play around with. It’s a part of my personality, it’s a part of my lifestyle. So I’m not just wearing clothes. I put that s--- on.”

Wade explained that he and his NBA colleagues began taking their outfits more seriously in the early 2000s, when the league's game-day dress code became "business casual."

"As I got more comfortable, as I got older, as fashion started becoming more acceptable, as we started going to more fashion shows, my fashion sense was able to elevate,” he said.

In the interview, he cited some of his most memorable game-day fashion moments like the Gucci capri pants that made local headlines and the bright pink pants he wore at a press conference.

“Now people wear pink pants to golf. It’s nothing. But at the time, it was a big deal, right?” he said, proud of the risks he took.

In February, the Oscar-nominated producer exclusively told PEOPLE what it feels like to have more time to focus on his self-care since retiring in 2019.

"I think in retirement, I've become a better student of my mind and body," he said. "It's really been a learning experience for me."
