Dwayne Johnson responds to Henry Cavill's surprise DC exit

Dwayne Johnson has responded to Henry Cavill's surprise exit as the World of DC's Superman.

Appearing in a mid-credits cameo scene for 2022's Black Adam, Cavill surprised fans when he confirmed his return to DC, but the news was short lived when, following a meeting with new DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, Cavill announced that he would be stepping down from the role permanently.

Speaking to Variety during a red carpet appearance at the Oscars 2023, Johnson opened up about the DC Studios bosses' decision to replace Cavill's Superman, which ultimately scrapped Johnson's plans for a Black Adam and Superman crossover movie.

"It's almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says: 'Not my coach, not my quarterback. I'm going to go with somebody new.'

Discussing the response to Black Adam, Johnson said: "All that I can do, and all that we could do when we were making Black Adam, was to put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple shots, but that's just the business of it."

Previously, the Black Adam star revealed that he "fought hard" for Henry Cavill's DC universe return, praising Cavill as "our generation's Superman".

"We have to bring back the most powerful, unstoppable force of all time in any universe. And you guys know who I'm talking about? Of course, that is Superman. And that's Henry Cavill," Johnson explained.

"So that's why we fought hard to bring Superman back, Henry Cavill. And there was no other Superman to bring back, by the way. Henry Cavill is our generation's Superman."
