A new Princess Diaries movie? In the words of Mia Thermopolis, Shut up!

The Hollywood Reporter first reported in 2022 that a third Princess Diaries film, written by Aadrita Mukerji, was in the works at Disney. The news came more than 20 years after the first movie starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews premiered.

Garry Marshall directed the original 2001 movie, as well as the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Discussing a potential Princess Diaries 3 after the filmmaker's passing, Andrews told BuzzFeed News, "I think we might do it in honor of [Marshall]."

Is Anne Hathaway returning for Princess Diaries 3?

Hathaway had previously admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she was "pulling for" a Princess Diaries 3. Months after news broke of the third movie, The Devil Wears Prada star told PEOPLE that it was "thrilling" to "see the level of excitement for it."

"We feel the exact same, and I know it's probably very frustrating," she said. "It's a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things."

Is Julie Andrews returning for Princess Diaries 3?

Like Hathaway, Andrews has also expressed interest in returning for a new movie. Speaking to BuzzFeed News in 2017, the Queen Clarisse Renaldi actress said that she "would very willingly and happily do" a third film.

Before Princess Diaries 3 was confirmed, Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight, "If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."

Who is in the Princess Diaries 3 cast?

While the cast for the potential movie has not yet been revealed, the first two Princess Diaries films starred Hathaway as Mia, who went from Princess to Queen of Genovia in the second movie, and Andrews as Mia's paternal grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi, the former Queen of Genovia.

The original film and the sequel also starred Heather Matarazzo as Mia's best friend Lilly Moscovitz, Caroline Goodall as Mia's mom Helen Thermopolis and Héctor Elizondo as Joe, who married Andrews' character in the second movie. Chris Pine appeared in 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement playing Mia's eventual love interest, Nicholas Devereaux.

What will happen in Princess Diaries 3?

Sources previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the third movie would be a continuation of the first two Princess Diaries films. Prior to Marshall's death, the director revealed to PEOPLE that he and Hathaway wanted to "do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan."

Following his death, Andrews revealed to Buzzfeed News that they "might do" the movie in honor of Marshall. She said, "Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to."
