It’s a pizza place with a famous burger.

One of the biggest pieces of a changing Brightleaf Square is set to open in Durham this month. Emmy-Squared, the Brooklyn-born and Nashville-based pizza chain will finally open in Durham on Thursday, May 9.

The restaurant has been highly anticipated in the Triangle since it was first announced in 2021.

The Durham location of Emmy Squared will be the brand’s third in North Carolina, following two earlier openings in Charlotte.

Emmy Squared takes its name from the Detroit-style pizzas at the heart of its menu, served as thick-crust rectangles instead of the familiar circles.

But it’s the burger that seems to have garnered the most acclaim, collecting shout-outs from publications like Eater for serving one of the best burgers in New York.

Emmy Squared opens in the former Brightleaf location of El Rodeo, which closed in 2021 after 32 years in Downtown Durham.
