Dune: Part Two's Stellan Skarsgård really didn't enjoy wearing his Baron Vladimir Harkonnen fat suit.

This weekend, the veteran Swedish actor (whose credits include The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Thor: Love and Thunder and Andor) will reprise the grotesque leader of House Harkonnen, who Duke Leto Atreides almost fatally poisoned in Dune: Part One.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the role, Skarsgård admitted he was "excited" to come back for the sequel directed by Denis Villeneuve, "with a reservation of the pain of doing the fat guy again".

"I was thinking that maybe there's a way to do it easier and less painful this time, and we didn't," he explained.

"We couldn't come up with anything. It was the same thing, except in this second one I'm never naked. And the naked added two hours of makeup. It was eight hours instead of six hours. So I was just sitting there for six hours in this one."

Asked if a particularly challenging scene stood out for him, Skarsgård replied: "No. Every scene is challenging if you have 50kg of prosthetics on".

The Dune sequel also provided him with the opportunity to work alongside Austin Butler, who plays the Baron's nephew Feyd-Rautha.

"We didn't build [a connection], it was there," revealed Skarsgård. "I saw him in his makeup and I said: 'That's a Harkonnen!' And then he had imitated my voice in a very good way so I thought 'Oh that's me'. And then we had a lot of fun.

"It was good, I could feed off him and his acting. It was also great fun to see him enjoy it, and had the pleasure of being that sadist. Playing it."

Dune: Part Two is released in cinemas this Friday (March 1).
