Houston finishes its season at 32-5. The Cougars were without their star Jamal Shead for all of the second half. Shead, the Big 12 player of the year, rolled his ankle late in the first half and did not return.

After a slow start, Duke cleaned up its early mistakes and lack of toughness and responded by matching Houston's physicality.

Duke leads Houston 54-48 with 1:13 left in second half: Roach drains big jumper

As Houston's scoring drought nears three minutes, Duke's Jeremy Roach might have drained the dagger jumper. The senior guard dribbled into the paint and rose for the short jumper and six-point advantage. Roach has 14 points, all in the second half.

Duke leads Houston 52-48 with 2:56 left in second half: Proctor rising in big moments

Duke's Tyrese Proctor beats shot clock with smooth pull-up jumper and then wrestles possession away from Houston guard on the other end.

With winning plays like that, Proctor and Duke might find themselves punching ticket to Elite Eight.

Duke leads Houston 48-46 with 5:30 left in second half: Filipowski splashes 3-pointer

Duke's Kyle Filipowski jabs and lets rip from the wing as shot clock was winding down. The sophomore center star has impressed for most of tonight's game to keep the Blue Devils in front, by a nose, with the final stretch upcoming.

Duke leads Houston 45-42 with 7:26 left in second half: Filipowski closing in on double-double

Duke's Kyle Filipowski is up to 11 points and nine rebounds, forcing his influence on this Sweet 16 matchup vs. Houston.

Duke leads Houston 39-37 with 10:53 left in second half: Jeremy Roach getting hot

Jeremy Roach, Duke's veteran guard, starts to find his jumper and is up to nine points on 4 of 10 shooting. His corner 3-point splash — thanks to ball rotation when Kyle Filipowski passed out of a double-team in the paint — briefly gave Blue Devils a five-point advantage.

Duke, Houston knotted at 32 with 15:08 left in second half

Without Jamal Shead, Houston lacks its leader and another backcourt playmaker. Can Duke take advantage here in the second half?

Duke leads Houston 23-22 at halftime: Jared McCain paces Blue Devils in scoring

After very sluggish start, Duke bounces back and seizes the halftime edge over the Houston Cougars. The stats from the opening 20 minutes tell a story of defense: Duke was 8 of 23 from the floor, Houston 10 of 29 (and no 3s).

Duke has the edge on the glass (19-17) but committed nine turnovers. Duke freshman Jared McCain leads all scorers with seven points.

Houston star Jamal Shead questionable to return with ankle injury

Big 12 player of the year Jamal Shead of Houston is questionable to return due to an ankle injury suffered on a drive late in the first half, CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reported.

Houston leads Duke 18-17 with 4:00 left in first half

Houston's defense is as advertised. The Cougars' top-ranked unit is taking away Duke's offensive sets. But Duke is improvising with individual talent: Jeremy Roach's cross-over and penetration feed goes to Mark Mitchell for baseline jam.

Blue Devils hanging around despite 6 of 19 shooting and eight turnovers. Still no word on Jamal Shead's injury, per CBS broadcast.

Houston leads 16-10: Jamal Shead injured for Cougars

Not long after he cashed in on a steal and breakaway layup, Houston guard Jamal Shead did not get up on a Cougars' offensive trip when he rolled his ankle. The Big 12 player of the year appeared to be in plenty of pain. Timeout on the floor with 6:38 left in the first half.

Houston leads Duke 10-7 with 11:28 left in first half

Duke settles in following slow start and show toughness over last stretch of action, especially from Kyle Filipowski and Ryan Young. The centers are battling on the boards, and Houston has gone cold from the field (2 of 9 since 3 of 4 start). Houston hasn't scored in about four minutes.

Houston leads Duke 8-3: Filipowski ends Blue Devils' drought

Duke sophomore star center Kyle Filipowski drills 3-pointer following a teammate's offensive rebound to get the Blue Devils on the board. But the ACC juggernaut has four turnovers in just over 4 minutes of game action. Houston, meanwhile, has shot 4 of 7 from the floor, all attempts from inside the paint.

Houston leads Duke 6-0: Terrible start for Blue Devils

Duke basketball coughs it up on its first possessions and Houston capitalizes with three inside baskets punctuated by Ja'Vier's slam on a Jamal Shead's alley-oop pass. The high-flying dunk forces Duke coach Jon Scheyer to call a timeout.

It's very early but Blue Devils look out of sync and not ready for Houston's first blow.
