What drop-off? Minus Rodgers but with Derek Carr, Raiders’ Davante Adams keeps rolling

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Davante Adams (celebrate their touchdown during the second half of an NFL game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, in Las Vegas.

Davante Adams keeps piling up yards and touchdowns.

The Raiders’ game Sunday again was no exception.

Adams finished with eight receptions for 177 yards and two TDs in a 27-20 victory over the Chargers at Allegiant Stadium.

That didn’t surprise Raiders coach Josh McDaniels, nor Derek Carr.

“What do you say? He keeps doing it over and over,” McDaniels said.

Carr heard the preseason noise that Adams wasn’t going to put up the big numbers like he had with the Green Bay Packers. Count among that questioning crowd Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who believed in July that Adams would see at least some regression in his stats with Carr throwing passes rather than Aaron Rodgers.

Said Favre at the time: “I’d be shocked if he had the same year he’s had this year. That’s not to say he can’t do it, but I would be shocked.”

Let the electricity flow.

“He’s well over 100 yards; he’s well over 10 touchdowns,” Carr said. “Everyone said none of those things would happen. We still have a lot of football left. When you win, everything feels better. There’s things we’re working on constantly because we don’t want to feel that we haven’t. We keep that constant pressure on each other. If it doesn’t look perfect, if I don’t throw it perfect, I’m like, ‘Let’s go try it again.’ If he doesn’t feel it’s perfect he’s, ‘Let me run that again.’

“We keep that mindset, but as we win it’s like they’re figuring it out and it looks great and forgetting the big days that he had prior to us going on this win streak.”

According to NFL Research, Adams with four games of 100-plus receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns has the most such games in a season in Raiders history.

What’s more, Adams has maintained such a pace that he has the fifth-most receiving touchdowns in a player’s first nine seasons in NFL history. Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens had more in such a span

He is the first player in NFL history to record seven-plus 100-yard games in three consecutive seasons.

For the season, Adams has 1,176 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, with the TDs tied for the most in the NFL.

Last season with the Packers, he finished with 1,553 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Adams has 85 career receiving touchdowns, passing Calvin Johnson (83) for the fifth-most receiving touchdowns in a player’s first nine seasons in NFL history.

Others aren’t surprised, certainly not Carr and Adams. After all, they’ve done it before at Fresno State, where they set school records.

Yes, it had been a while since they teamed up, but it seems they haven’t missed a step.

“A lot of hard work,” Carr said. “We try our best. We knew it was going to be a growing process and hadn’t played together in a decade, almost. Numbers don’t matter until you win and it’s exciting. I think we can get better as we continue, but he made unbelievable plays today.”
