Carolina Beach police officer facing charges following the death of Wilmington pedestrian

A Carolina Beach police officer is facing charges following a traffic fatality on South College Road.

On Saturday, March 9, police responded to the 100 block of South College Road at approximately 4:30 a.m. after report of a pedestrian and vehicle collision. The pedestrian, identified as 40-year-old Steven Barlok, died as a result of his injuries.

Cavin Sydes, the driver of the vehicle, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, reckless driving and speeding, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department.

The investigation revealed that while the pedestrian was in the roadway, the driver of the vehicle was speeding at the time of the incident, according to the release.

“We are aware of the incident and charges by Wilmington police. We are currently conducting an administrative investigation,” a spokesperson for the Carolina Beach Police Department said to WWAY TV. “Cavin Sydes is currently on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation. We cannot comment any further on the incident at this time due to the ongoing investigation.”

It was one of two pedestrians who died Saturday on South College Road.

According to a WPD news release Sunday, units responded to an unrelated vehicle collision around 10:41 p.m. that resulted in the death of Edward Williams, a 56-year-old man from Wilmington.
